Did Dickey force John Ward Out?

John Ward at 50% is better than Kesling anytime. Kesling doesn't even get the line of scrimmage correct. I'll take John Ward.

I think he only donated 1 million, rather than 10. He is very wealthy, and I miss him as our announcer. He is far better than anything else out there right now.

No--- I remember being shocked at the donation--pretty positive it was 10 mil. Could be researched, but wth. I have a very good memory when it comes to UT. Donation was made in the names of John & Mrs Ward.

When the donation was first made, the amount was not revealed. The university did say, it was the largest single endowment in school history at that time.

that just means Ward had a better spotter

Thing is, lot of times JW's games weren't televised---so if the spot was wrong, no matter. AND the guy was so good, we would have given him a pass anyway. John painted a picture, told the story, and we believed him.

"Twisting and turning and churning and GRINDING down to the 35 yard line". It will be-- FIRST DOWN---BIG ORANGE!

"Bottom!"

"Spining, driving fighting"

Tickles the twine
GIVE IT TO HIM!
DID HE MAKE IT? HE MADE IT!
"Cockrell back to pass, he looks, long pass downfield is---COMPLETE!!
To the 40-35-30-25-20-15-10-54321--Give him SIX! Touchdown Tennesssee!
"Bill, he worked overtime to pull that pass in"

There are a hundreds more. Man I miss JW----Imagine John with Kiff's scoring bunch!

I am old enough that Ward's last few years were when I was in college. We used to turn on the radio and listen to him broadcast the game while watching tv. There was an obvious lag, but it was much more enjoyable than listening to the tv announcers.

ditto, the lag just enabled us to yell "give..him..6..TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE" along with ward.:rock2:

Doug Dickey had NOTHING to do with John's retirement. John stated many years ago that he would step down when he felt that he was no longer performing @ the top of his game. When he decided to retire he stated that it was because he no longer was performing @ the level he had been doing in the past.

I would rather one of the German professors at UT do men's basketball in German than have to listen to Deerstone do it. Kesling's main problem is that he's a tv guy. He just doesn't paint the picture in your mind. It's hard to visualize one play as different from another with kesling. I think his voice is fine, and he means well....just too much a tv man.

From what I have heard Ward drank his way out pissing off people at the top on the way.

Sorry, i don't buy that. JW used to live in Farragut. Not sure if he does anymore. I would bump into him all the time at Krogers, bank, dry cleaners. Morning or night, never a stitch out of place, always spoke and friendly to a fault. Never a sign or a hint of alcohol on the man. :shades:

No announcer is ever going to live up to the old "classic" radio announcers -- Ward in Tennessee, Munson in Georgia, etc. -- simply because all the games are on TV now. It used to be that, other than maybe one or two games a year that were on TV, radio was how you consumed college football. of course we adored John Ward -- his voice literally WAS Tennessee football in a way that will never happen again.

I don't think much of Kesling, obviously, but I can't say that I care much. I think I've only listened to one or two of his broadcasts in the entire decade that he's been calling games. I've heard the crappy Vol Network PPV TV guys more than I have Kesling. The radio announcers really are irrelevant in 2009.

As much as i hate to say it, there at the end Ward had lost a step so to speak. I think he went out at the right time. I mean you dont want to pull a Dick Clark..

Where did you hear this? Ward lived down the street from my grandfather and was good friends with him so I had many run-ins with John Ward and he had been nothing but kind and visited my grandfather frequently when he became sick. I've been in the Ward home before and nothing I've seen or experienced when talking to him or being in his house would ever hint at anything like this.

Amazing to me how much Kesling sucks in football but is really really good in basketball. Of course Bertlekamp may have something to do with that. Kesling is ridiculously bad at football.

Classic Kesling call:

"Hardesty..around the end..and he's got some room and finally gets tackled after a gain of 27"

I think that Bertelkamp is definitely the reason that Kesling is easier to listen to in basketball rather than football. I really like Bertelkamp, he is unabashedly a U.T. fan and he gets so excited he can get the listener into the game.

I do think Kesling has gotten worlds better at calling football games. He was so bad when he first started, and he has improved to being no less than mediocre now. The thing that really bugs me about Kesling is when he says "They wind the clock", meaning the game clock has started. I really hate that.

We live in a T.V. culture now (and have for some time). The guys that came up through radio broadcasting are history. It's a shame, and it will never be the same.

You are right----however if John were still doing the broadcasts, I would watch and listen to JW. And when I went for a beer, I wouldn't miss a thing. Listening to a great radio announcer is a brain exercise the newbies will never experience. Only guy I remember as good as John was Jack Buck on MNF with Hank Stram.

The John Ward \ Bill Anderson duo - untouchable. I use to have a bunch of casette tapes of jw calling games, & i think my wife sold em at a yard sale. One of my fav JW calls was when Nylo Sylvan returned a punt to tha house, "He`s to the 45, the 40, he can fly, 35, 30". Thats what i miss. Can you still buy "Give him 6" shirts ? And i know Bob Kesling isnt the greatest, but he beats the hell out of eli gold ! IMO

'Course he did----you could feel it. And he had the inate ability to make you not feel as bad after a loss---and John had to call a lot of them.

that just means Ward had a better spotter

From the Voice video the people who worked with John said the spotter was just there to watch the game Ward already knew the names and numbers. In the football program this year the John Ward interview was great. He said he missed the preparation of doing the games the most after 10 years. I do not know anyone who probably prepared for a game in broadcasting and I am sure Kessling does not because there are too many gaffes, plus John was blessed with a great mind and used it to thrill us with some of the most memorable calls and phrases ever. He is missed more every season in my opinion. Should have gotten new broadcasters with the new coaching staff.
