DG's Takeaways from the Florida Game

I'll keep bumping this thread cause the OP has done a very eloquent job if recapping and articulating the frustration, w/out bashing everything TN Orange

Exactly.

This loss is just inexplicable. We dominated this game and still somehow found a way to lose. The fact that it's to Florida makes it about 5 times worse.

Do we fully appreciate how many close and inexplicable losses we've had since Kiffin? Started with Mt Cody blocking a game winning FG...twice. Dooley had several. Now, with CBJ.

I'm not superstitious but there's something funky Goin on here.

As an outsider (yes, I am a weirdo who is a Gator grad, but worked at Oak Ridge National Lab, so have a lot of Vol friends), I have to ask those who know, how has it come to be that a school known for great linemen literally for decades on end has put such a pedestrian offensive line out there for several years running. Honestly, if Dobbs could generate even 5-8 more completions per game in the passing game, this offense of UT's would rank with the elite in the country, but with that line in front of him, I just cannot see how it will happen.

As for Saturday, that was a pretty fair and accurate summary. I feel badly for the UT kids, I really do. They deserved that win, but it does seem like that Butch and his assistants get way too conservative toward the end of games. That makes it twice as hard on the players because teams like Florida and OK were never worried while trailing late in the game because everyone knows the UT tendencies to just shut it down and play not to lose.

I thought Debord called a decent game as well. You can talk all you want about wasting wrs but they are not getting open and the oline cannot block long enough for Dobbs to go through his progressions. My big problem with the d is mosely. He is absolutely terrible. He is soft against the run and after the catch he plays off because he is so worrried about getting roasted deep. Notice both ou and uf picked on him relentlessly. Whether you guys want to believe it or not Florida and okalahoma are still deeper and more talented than us. The gap has closed a ton but a lot of our upper classmen just aren't very talented. Yes butch Jones was bad yesterday but the players lost these games. Calling for Jones head is ridiculous and will only set this program back. Les miles has proved that a very average gameday coach can win with talent.

I agree with most of what you said, and I'd add a couple of things.

TN VN posters are an arrogant and unrealistic lot: we forget we have had a decade of mediocrity. We finally get some talent in the program, so we at least are competitive talent wise and we think that means we hav arrived. No, it means we can compete, finally.
Some on here, quite a few in fact, had Dobbs as a Heisman candidate, Kahlil as NFL ready, Cam as a first rounder, and Barnett as an unstoppable TFL machine. If all that's true, those guys got to make plays when it counts. We don't make the plays because we haven't the experience or confidence-yet-to make them.
I'm not suggesting we didn't have some coaching blunders but we aren't yet as good as many of you want to believe.

Derek Dooley recruited zero offensive linemen in 2012.

so to defend CBJ on one item, the O line has had to be a completed re build from the ground up when he got here.

obviously, still under construction. and we knew that. just hoping a year of experience last year would help more than it has apparently.

I'm mailing this to the UT Athletic Department in Butch's name...

Some "charts" in here about "when to go for 2 point conversions"..."when to take penalties', "base defense...man vs zone"etc.

DG's Takeaways from the Florida Game

Nice post. Well thought out and accurate. As I've stated in other posts, there are problems all over the field and within the staff. I sincerely hope our guys find the intestinal fortitude to address them.

I'm afraid with all of the negative attention, and the failure to make use of the WR core, we might see a slight drop in recruiting in the upcoming year. I sincerely hope Butch pulls it together for the rest of the season.
