Devrin Young's potential....

actually he would of had more offers had he stayed in the game

Georgia Tech
Duke
Tulane
Western Kentucky
Texas A&M
Mississippi State
were all offering him...but it made no sense ...they knew he wanted to play for Tennessee....they told him to call if something changes....

Stanford offered him as a junior...so that would have been at least 7 offers right there...

he was also hearing from Nebraska, Michigan, Virgina and had other offers from CN, Elon, Western Carolina, etc...

if he stayed in the game he would have had 10 + offers...the vols came in at the right time....and the kid has wanted to be a vols all his life...so why wait and play this game like some recruits do if you know where you wanna go?

Good post

Devrin Young is a player. There is no need for all these people bashing him. Yes, he played at local Bearden High School in Knoxville. Yes, the competition he played wasn't very good. But that doesn't matter. We should be proud of the local player who signs with UT, not constantly bash him. If you have watched Devrin play live or watched his highlights and still can't tell this kid can play then you don't know football.

He isn't going to be a fulltime RB at UT that can handle 20 or 25 carries a game. He also is never going to pass Marlin Lane or Tom Smith on the RB depth chart. But he will be a game-changer at KR/PR from Day#1. There is no doubt that alone is the reason Coach Dooley offered him a scholarship. He at some point will start to get some touches from scrimmage as well. Everyone knows our return game has had some problems. IMO Devrin Young will instantly help us in that category. He has the elite speed and change of direction to do so. He might be redshirted next year, but I am calling a return TD for Devrin in his first full year at UT.

He is at UT. Posters on VN complaining about him isn't going to change the fact he is attending UT. Let's just accept that he is at UT and cheer for him on Saturdays.

You are asking a lot from all these non Tennessee fans who post here and try to make us think they are VOL fans.

Kid had an offer from Stanford as a Junior, i can guarantee you his mental capacity is beyond that of Nuke. Is it better to use a scholly on a wildcard like Nuke, or a guy like DY. He is a smart, athletic, and loyal Vol fan and i can't wait till he gets on the field.

While I am a big DY fan and am pulling for the kid to do well, his rating was very accurate. Sure he is fast, and quick..but so are alot of other players. I don't think he is the fastest player on our team even at 160lbs. We have guys who are 6'2 200 and could run him down IMO. Alot of HS players on highlight film show they can catch the ball on a kick or punt. Could we have got a guy at 200lbs who could field a punt and run a 4.4, sure...but they took DY to do the job. We will just have to see how it plays out.

I bet you're wrong.

Yeah - kid definitely does not have "elite speed" - what he does have is good vision and is quick - so I don't see him breaking many KO/punts for TDs because he'll make some guys miss but won't be able to finish the play off for the TD.

Not the fastest. However, he seems able to make a cut and not lose any speed doing so.

Like I said - his quickness/change of direction is elite. He's shown he's not going to outrun good athletes - but he can make them miss.

You stated that"we have guys 200lbs that could run him down IMO". So is that your opinion or is that a fact? You can't make a statement like that and MAKE it true because you want it to be. I want a list of these 200lb guys who run mid 4.3 to low 4.4 40 times. I hate to see DY's speed and quickness after being on our S+T program. I am AMAZED at how a 4.3/40 kid from Florida or Georgia is FASTER than a 4.3/40 kid from Tennessee. I've lived in Tampa, Cleveland, OH, Charleston, WV, and Tennessee. Seen some GREAT and some AWFUL HS football. Even where they had bad football, I've seen some GREAT players come from those areas. One thing I've learned, if you can play you can play. Those thinking different don't understand this game.

That's what I've been trying to say. Talent is talent. You got it or you don't. Devrin has it. Yes he is small and yes he doesn't play against the best talent. Those are facts. But another fact is he is a very talented football player. That's all there is to it.

SIAP, DY says that A. Posey is his roommate for next year. Talk about an odd pair, 5-7, 160 and 6-7, 300+. Nobody better mess with DY.

Also said that despite not being allowed to be on the field for spring practice, Chaney wants him right with him so that he can learn the play calls. We don't need to worry about figuring out how he'll be utilized, sounds like Chaney already knows. :)

Finished by saying he plans to work with a local punter to practice catching punts when the weather warms up some.

DV is going to be a special KR for us. I would not be surprise we see him in some set plays by his sophomore year taking direct snaps.

I've seen him play live a few times. He's pretty explosive but he tends to slow down on long runs. But I think with conditioning and practice he'll be our next Carl Pickens on returns

If you will watch his films again closely, I think you will see that he slows down once he gets so far ahead that he can't be caught. A lot of times he is just walking by the time he gets to the goal line. I also noticed that he seemed to do this more the later in the game it got. I think you also have to take into account how many plays a game Bearden used him. It concerned me the first time I saw his films, but after studying them a little closer it appears he just conserves his energy by not running fullout on long runs when he knows he can't be caught.

i agree with an early post that this kid is either going to be a fan favorite or Wilkes 2.0.. i caught one of his games on tv and the kid looked pretty electric, which will hopefully = being good, at least, at the college level. he is easily the most interesting recruit, to speculate about.

Once he starts playing against top competition day in and day out he will improve as well. That quickness will be great for special teams.
