Devrin Young's potential....

As long as he doesn't fumble a punt or kickoff in a seasons time and has a decent return average, I say we hit a homerun with him no matter what else he does. Our return game has been awful lately.

actually he would of had more offers had he stayed in the game

Georgia Tech
Duke
Tulane
Western Kentucky
Texas A&M
Mississippi State
were all offering him...but it made no sense ...they knew he wanted to play for Tennessee....they told him to call if something changes....

Stanford offered him as a junior...so that would have been at least 7 offers right there...

he was also hearing from Nebraska, Michigan, Virgina and had other offers from CN, Elon, Western Carolina, etc...

if he stayed in the game he would have had 10 + offers...the vols came in at the right time....and the kid has wanted to be a vols all his life...so why wait and play this game like some recruits do if you know where you wanna go?

Hey man, I tried to PM you, but your PM box is full. Need to speak to you about something, nothing bad. But you will have to delete a PM or 2. Thanks man, stay up now.

Oh yeah, don't waste your time on the DY haters. If he would have played somewhere with better comp, he might have had decent blocking. They don't wanna look at it that way though.

Have any of you heard of The Battle on Rocky Top? They have 2 of them per yr, one at the beginning (Aug) and one at the end of each football season (Oct-Nov). The one in August is the 2nd biggest youth football tourney in the nation and it's held in Knoxville. I know for a fact, my son played and I coached in it. Teams from all over the North, South, MidWest play in it. We got teams from Ga, Fla, Texas, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, Va, Mid-West Tenn, Carolinas, Alabama, dude IT'S THE REAL DEAL. I've seen Knoxville teams Win the whole damn thing over The Atlanta Viking 6's, The Columbus Ohio Lil' Buckeyes, The Forrest Park Rams (Cinncinatti). These are all star travel teams from areas known as football powers. I've seen the Knoxville Pilot team slaughter teams from everywhere. I've also seen REGULAR REC-LEAGUE teams from Knoxville take down some of these powers. Also seen some of these powers take down some Knoxville teams pretty bad.

Point being, there's some talent here, it's just being under-developed do to the lack of structured Jr. High programs in some areas. Tahat makes it IMPOSSIBLE to have a proper feeder system in place. The teams with Jr. High programs put out the best players around here. Knoxville still kinda suffers from the ole' redneck good ole' boy system in some areas as well, but that's getting better. Getting D-1 Sports in Knoxville will help a TREMENDOUS amount in the future as well.

Why hasn't this been merged into the DY thread? We don't need all these useless threads around here on one guy. Mods merge this like you do everyone else.

He was the best player I saw Maryville play this year, and that includes the kids from Alcoa and Smyrna.

He's got football speed. He knows what to do with the ball when he gets it and is fun to watch in the open field.

I am curious on if we will redshirt him or not.

I think too many people on here are overselling him and too many are underselling him. He's going to be a solid guy in the return game who may work his way into nickel/dime packages in a couple of years and if we are innovative on offense may have some Wildcat sets for him.

I think the real question is, is how they are going to put him in position to make plays. I also don't think we are going to see Devrin's ceiling reached until closer to his junior year.

I have a feeling he is going to fool lots of posters !!! If he runs back one touchdown it is worth taking a chance on him. I am all for him. Go big orange !!!!

Am I the only one who feels that DY could end up being one of the most valuable and fan-favorite recruits in this class?

I understand that he is rated lowly because of his size and the HS competition in TN but I can't help but be reminded of Desean Jackson when I watch video on him. The kid is dynamite and should vastly outperform his low ranking. His film doesn't look low 3/borderline 2 star to me.

If he played in almost any other state in the South he would have been a 4 star. His speed translates to any level of football and we have all seen how guys like Danny Woodhead and Wes Welker have done recently in the NFL. They are all taller than he is but height has nothing to do with what he will be used for and he should be able to get to 185 without losing any speed.

I'm sure all the DY haters will flame my post and I'm not saying that he is on any of the previously mentioned players' level but I'm excited to see what his kind of speed can do. I will be shocked if he does not at least run a P or KO back in 2011....

I've seen him play live a few times. He's pretty explosive but he tends to slow down on long runs. But I think with conditioning and practice he'll be our next Carl Pickens on returns

I hope him getting tired on long runs is a problem we have to worry about.

+1 I like this pick for the Vols. A player like this is not ever going to be "top-ranked". I don't think Dooley took him b/c he thot he would be a starting RB or WR. He sees game changing special teams ability and a niche at WR, RB, or DB.

A good team is made up of various parts when each part does it's job. DY is not the kind of player that can do a lot of jobs, but rather a skilled returner that can change a game or 3.

We NEED that and I'm glad we've got him.

Funny thing about physics. When 225 runs into 225 there is usually some pain and equal stoppage. When 225 hits 165-170, there is some recoil difference and the 225 isn't slowed down as much so impact is less.

Thanks Bill Nye

The bottom line is that we want each and every one of our recruits to have great Vol careers. I for one will cheer for DY just like he was a 5*. Every Vol is a 5* in my eyes. One thing is for sure, you have speed and quickness or you don't. It can't be coached. The kid can sure fly and makes people miss.

Exactly. He's just so small...I worry about him being split in two on some huge hit.

:birgits_giggle:

I'm from Kingsport tn and seen young against a very good dobyns Bennett team here in kpt in the playoffs he isn't as explosive with the ball out of the backfield like I thought he would be but he is very elusive in the kicking game as ya already no seein him in person u can just tell he gonna end up being special I also seen James Stewart in the playoffs against db and young stacks up every bit against Stewart from the games I've seen tht don't mean I'm comparing the 2 DY still has a long way to go to be the next "little man" in my opinion but he will end up makin a big impact cause of his speed elusiveness and suprising power

I hate to keep harping on CDD's Signing Day Press Conference, but you can see his eye's light up when DY's name is mentioned.

He has him pegged for returns and expects him to contribute.

We'll just have to see how it plays out.

VFL !

Devrin Young is a player. There is no need for all these people bashing him. Yes, he played at local Bearden High School in Knoxville. Yes, the competition he played wasn't very good. But that doesn't matter. We should be proud of the local player who signs with UT, not constantly bash him. If you have watched Devrin play live or watched his highlights and still can't tell this kid can play then you don't know football.

He isn't going to be a fulltime RB at UT that can handle 20 or 25 carries a game. He also is never going to pass Marlin Lane or Tom Smith on the RB depth chart. But he will be a game-changer at KR/PR from Day#1. There is no doubt that alone is the reason Coach Dooley offered him a scholarship. He at some point will start to get some touches from scrimmage as well. Everyone knows our return game has had some problems. IMO Devrin Young will instantly help us in that category. He has the elite speed and change of direction to do so. He might be redshirted next year, but I am calling a return TD for Devrin in his first full year at UT.

He is at UT. Posters on VN complaining about him isn't going to change the fact he is attending UT. Let's just accept that he is at UT and cheer for him on Saturdays.
