The worst part? Derek Mason kicked our ass while he was here. Imagine that headline-“Vandy fires coach that has decent record against in-state, hated rival.”
How far we have fallen.
Watch them hire Freeze! He can get to a bowl game every year and pull some upsets.Apparently they have the money to do what needs to be done like SC.
Vanderbilt coaching candidates: Clark Lea, Jay Norvell lead list of names to replace Derek Mason
Yeah, I saw ESPN touting the historical significance (mostly because they want to generate clicks and ad revenue, one assumes). And one of my (Vandy grad) daughters went out of her way to mention it to me, as well.
But I'm not really seeing it.
Fact is, other college football teams have played female kickers. Several times, over the decades. One of those kickers even scored points for her team. "Yes," ESPN says, "but those weren't Power 5 programs."
...
So, not as historic as all that. Just another iteration of a thing that rarely happens.
I thought the exact same thing. To be honest, I thought Mason was doing it to try to save his job. Appeal to the woke college administrators.
It's very far-fetched to believe that she was the best place kicker at that entire university. I'm not saying that a woman couldn't be a good place-kicker. Penn State had one several years back who was their 3rd stringer. But it's not like she practices it often and I'm sure there's someone who kicked in high school, or a men's soccer or rugby player who could do it.
Felt like Mason was making a desperation move to save his job. Or he knew he was getting fired anyway, and just decided to give her a shot for the semi-historic nature of it.
It was interesting at least; or it would've been if Vandy had ever scored a touchdown or gotten within the 20 yard line and had to kick a field goal. But feels kinda lame that all she got to do was squib the 2nd half kickoff.
I’m all for the best player to be on the field. I don’t care if it’s a woman but I don’t get why it’s such a big deal to have a female kicker come out and kick it like a middle school player and make a big deal about it. Someone else was better and kicked the rest of the game. She was used as a publicity stunt and people acted like she broke through a barrier. Nope, just a side show for attention.
Or...he knew he was getting fired and said screw it, let’s roll out a soccer player. To be honest, I thought Mason was doing it to try to save his job. Appeal to the woke college administrators.

Did McIntyre beat Fulmer twice?I know they have low expectations, but how they attract a coach with any pedigree is beyond me. At an institutional level, they don't even try and they play in the SEC.
Mason and Franklin were very good hires for them resume-wise; Franklin had been a P5 OC and Mason a P5 DC who was the DC for some really good David Shaw Stanford teams.
Franklin and Gerry DiNardo are the only guys who have ever been able to use it in any kind of stepping stone fashion, although Franklin is the only guy to use it as a stepping stone who was actually good at Vandy. DiNardo was terrible, yet LSU hired him anyway. And LSU was nowhere near the job in 1995 that it is today.
