Noticed Indiana is #1 preseason in NCAA basketball. They were getting beat by 30 by average teams his 1st year

Instate recruiting was the key to TC and his rebuilding of IU so quickly. He has had 3 consecutive top notch classes. Mainly comprised of Indiana guys too. Not all of them, but most.

Oh, so that's the problem. Dooley's supposed to be coaching basketball and this whole time we've had him coaching football.

Damn you Mike Hamilton.

lol OP comparing Tom Crean to Derek Dooley. CTC found ways to upset the biggies and has it rolling now. Dooley has it going in reverse. Terrible analogy. Might as well say Dooley and Knute Rockne are the same.

How does he = Shula? Shula had Alabama competing for a national title. Indiana was patient look at the reward. Maybe we need to give him one more year.

When did this happen? I remember the hot start to 2005 but they weren't really "competing" for it, and they wouldn't have made it even if they did run the table.

I thought they were #1 with Croyle could be wrong though. The point of the original post is he looked god awful at one point but once his players had been there and the university was patient it is now paying off

Tom Crean was a proven coach at Marquette. Where he coached Dwayne Wade. Took them to the Final 4 and had a 168-60 record while he was there. Please tell me how you see a correlation between him and Dooley.

Different story they were playing walkons. The school knew it would be a long way back to the top after Kelvin Sampson left that place a wreck. Plus with drastically less players on a basketball roster than a football roster it's easier for a few players to make a difference.

Crean has been a HC for 14 years also. Dooley would not get 14 years at Vandy to start proving himself.

Crean built them back up from nothing. Dooley has the same task. Except Dooley has to beat 3 of the best teams in the nation as part of his regular schedule. With little to no instate talent. That is where the similarities begin to end.

Alabama got as high as #3 and 9-0 before losing to LSU in OT in 2005. They then lost to Auburn the next week and then won the Cotton Bowl to end 10-2 and #8 in the nation.

That was after a 4-9 season in 2003, 6-7 season in 2004, and following in 2006 they went 6-7, though Shula was fired before the Independence Bowl.
