Derek Dooley......(merged)

Not really. If you wanted, you could certainly have him out in 2. Just don't give him a huge contract.

Really? Tennessee hires its first African-American head coach and then fires him after only two years? Think it through for a minute and consider the consequences if UT did that.

There is no short term trial for Kippy. If you make the guy the head coach, you are stuck with him for at least three years before you can fire him if he tanks. Probably four.

That's just wrong. If you don't like the direction the program is headed near the end of next year, change it. If you do, that is when you add permenance to the position.

The man's race has no effect on that.

o great....well lets enjoy bein down in the SEC standing next to vandy and kentuckey for bout 5 years then hamilton will be fired, fulmer will become AD, he'll then hire a coach and it'll take 3 years to start buildin the program back up!

just heard walker on howard stern. can't say i came away thinking he was coaching material. for instance he said he has multiple personality disorder.

Really? So does Hammy ... One believes he's the AD of a major SEC athletic program, another that he's Herbert Hoover, another that he's Princess Tiki of the island nation of Gazpacho, another that ...

As easy as it is for us to kick dirt on Dooley, please take into consideration that 5 of the 8 teams that beat LaTech last year probably could have beaten us at some point in '09.

I like the hire.

I'm with you on this one. I just looked at his record and they played those teams tight. But most just want to whine without really looking at the guy.

I agree that's the way it should be, but that's not reality. Fire Kippy after two years, much less one, and you'll have the NAACP protesting outside every home game, with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson on all the news talk shows making a huge issue out of it. Notre Dame got ration of grief and they gave Willingham 3 years before they canned him. Not to mention they aren't from the South with all the preconceptions the media has about this part of the country.

How is Kippy a better HC and Dooley? His only head coaching job was in the XFL. Dooley has been a HC and AD at the same time and vastly improved the facilities and the team. He took them to a bowl game in his 2nd season. Yeah they took a step back the next year but thats going to happen to all programs that are basically starting form the ground up. Besides, who wants to play in Ruston LA? He was also the recruiting coordinator under Saban. Everyone fell in love with Kippy but not even giving this guy a chance to speak.

well cutcliff and that staff seem to have a little better record of success than somebody from one of the former La directional schools.

i just see some chinks forming in the mighty checkerboard when yall reach this far for a coach and get shot down by so many others.

You do realize we don't often BBQ. But when we do, we prefer pig. Stay hungry my friends. :good!:

Excellent post! Let's give the man a chance. Kippy would have been a horrible hire for HC. His resume has 'career assistant' written all over it. He is a great asset to any program, and should definitely remain on staff, but is not head coach material IMO, or someone would have given him a shot by now. If Dooley can run LA Tech well (and by all evidence he has, in every area including the entire athletic department), he can run a bigger program like UT. I think we'll be just fine with this hire. Is it a 'splash'? No. But it is a solid hire. We weren't going to get a 'splash' this time of year.

For all of you who had an unadulterated and slavish infatuation with Kiffun, why would you think you could do a better job assessing Dooley's prospects?

For once in his life, the Gator makes a fairly valid point.

I wouldn't go that far. We're judging Dooley based on his coaching. Most opinions on Kiffin's coaching ability haven't really changed, just his character for leaving after 1 yr. Dooley's loyalty if hired hasn't really been questioned by anyone yet.

Coaching ability without character isn't going to produce a NC. I don't think a stint at La Tech (that's not a direction) proves or disproves his coaching ability. All the positive referrals from successful HCs means something. What the heck. The next two years are going to be mediocre anyway. Give the guy a chance.
