Derek Dooley......(merged)

UT ended up with Dooley, because every other coach Hamilton approached wasn't interested, and he approached most every name that has been thrown out on this board.

I'm no Hamilton fan, but he didn't have a lot of options that I've read. For whatever reason, no one is interested in this position that he has approached. I don't know if it the timing, the idea of playing Saban and Meyer every year, etc but no one was interested in the postion. Even Cutcliffe withdrew his name.

I thought I'd go away for a half hour or so and come back to better news and what you guys are telling me is that we're darn near paying this guy Saban money.

Great. Hammy is such a good AD.

He finds unproven coaches, pays them like their proven, and then takes credit for a wonderful hire in the highly unlikely event that it actually works out.

We sure do have to pay people a lot of money to work for him. I hope that if/when we have to buy this guy out, he makes a good replacement AD.

Seriously though... he approached some very desirable coaches, then jumped to the bottom of the list. He's just not very good at his job. He can probably do something else better.

But to be positive, the part he does best now is talk about why UT is not as desirable as we all think. That's Sexton's job. His is the opposite. Does he get that?

Which is why I think making no move would have been better. Tag Kippy, see how he progresses next season, and see who is available during a more reasonable time frame.

There is no way that is a worse scenario than taking a chance on making a hire that has the real possibility of turning out very badly for everyone involved.

I don't disagree. But I have to wonder if Hamilton's personal situation isn't so precarious that doing nothing, even if it's the smart move, is something he could afford to risk.

I'm not convinced Hamilton has aimed very high here anyway? We are talking about the guy whose second choice last year was Troy Calhoun.

Hamilton is damn fool if he pays him 3.7 million. Of course Hamilton is the guy who is used to getting bent over by agents.

He must be the worst negotiator to walk the planet. If he's paying this much, he's not suitable as a used car lot salesman, much less the UT AD job.

So, obligating UT to some $18M contract with a 4-8 coach is less risky than 'doing nothing'?

It might be to Mike Hamilton's own personal self. You see tons of instances when pro GMs lock their teams into insanely stupid contracts in a desperate attempt to save their own skins.

From Biddle at The Tennessean:

"I don't see any slam dunk candidates out there for Hamilton. Should he hire someone who he doesn't think can take the program to the next level? Name an interim coach and take his time to ensure he gets the right choice. The timing could not be any worse than now. Given a year, maybe less, Hamilton will have more choices available."

That's the point of a LOT of Vol fans ... Every time you make a desperation decision, you cheapen the school and the brand that much more.

It's reasonably well-known that Coach K was an unknown from Army when he took over that program. His first 3-4 years were TERRIBLE! But, a strong, seasoned AD stood by him (despite many threats concerning his own job), weathered the storm, and the rest is the history hanging from the rafters of Cameron.

Assuming Dooley is the next coming of Lombardi, anyone think Vol fans are gonna give him 4-5 years to HOPEFULLY get his act together? Anyone think our boy, Hammy, won't throw him under the bus when the pressure gets too great?

Tennessee is NOT an environment conducive to on-the-job training. That's one monster of a stadium. Too many Saturdays of little or no national TV and bowl games that occur somewhere around December 5th ain't gonna keep that bad boy filled.

We need someone who can coach and recruit in the SEC ... NOW! No matter what anyone thinks of young master Dooley ... I don't think ANYONE thinks he's ready to go toe-to-toe with Saban, Meyer, et al now. If they do ... Don't hog the pipe, Dudes!!

That last sentence tells me he as on edge as any volnation member......:)

There is no short term trial for Kippy. If you make the guy the head coach, you are stuck with him for at least three years before you can fire him if he tanks. Probably four.

This is what Hammy doesn't get. Yet, he's writing the checks like he's landing the coach who deserves it.

I've heard the Board of Trustees is required to fire him. I hope they're in some sort of emergency meeting and have, at the very least, put this crazy move on hold until they can convene.

Not really. If you wanted, you could certainly have him out in 2. Just don't give him a huge contract.
