Derek Dooley......(merged)

La Tech record this year 4-8??? Did not know that, but his team did play quite a few big time schools such as Auburn, LSU, Boise. What was record his other two years, can't find them?

I agree with you...on her spelling and grammar. However, your side bar with your NFL comment that had nothing to do with anything in her post you were busting her on scored you nothing.

GVF - Thank you for the backup. I have relegated myself to PC posts only. I just get so fired up about the negativity.

P.S. That's my wife. I see why you were so quick to defend me.:birgits_giggle:

This guy wasn't in Miss State's top 3 choices last year when they hired Mullen. Thank you Mike for making our once proud program a laughingstock for years to come!

"Erickson's head coaching career began at age 34 at the University of Idaho. He was hired on December 11, 1981, succeeding Jerry Davitch, who had been fired just days before the final game (a one-point home loss against rival Boise State). A pre-season playoff pick, Idaho finished the 1981 season with eight consecutive losses, winless in the Big Sky conference.

Building on his reputation as an offensive innovator, Erickson became Idaho's all-time winningest head coach in just four seasons with the Vandals (1982-85), taking them to the I-AA playoffs in his first and fourth seasons. In his first season, Erickson took a 3-8 team in 1981 and immediately turned it into a 8-3 playoff team, led by decathlete quarterback Ken Hobart. Erickson's overall record with the Vandals was 32-15 (.680): 31-13 (.704) in the regular season and 1-2 in post season. He went 4-0 against rival Boise State, a team which had dominated the series by winning the previous five games.[1] (The winning streak against the Broncos continued through 1993, reaching 12 games.)"

According to Google, long enough to become " Idaho's all-time winningest head coach in just four seasons with the Vandals (1982-85)". Was there another point you were trying to make?

It is still off, but I'll try to answer politely. Erickson jumped ship after a single year twice--once from Wyoming to WSU, and once, in his second stint at Idaho, for ASU. He and Saban, two of the coaches under discussion, are perhaps the two worst examples possible if you are trying to tout loyalty as a characteristic among succesful coaches.

This discussion started with the idea that character is the most important ingredient in winning a national championship. It isn't, and there are numerous examples that prove that. Talent is the most important ingredient.

That doesn't mean you have to hire a scumbag to win games, but it does mean that whoever you hire had better be able to bring in talented players.

Since you're doing such a crack job of research, how many years did Erickson stay at Wyoming?

I'm disappointed, in Hamilton more than anything. I'm backing Dooley until he gives me a reason to doubt, but I definitely think this hire is going backwards...

Maybe the hiring of Coach Dooley will clear the board in the coming days of our "front-running, fair-weather" University of Tennessee 'followers' whom repeatedly post inaccurate or fantasized information or opinion. Notice I did not say, "fans"!

Like everyone else, I don't know what this coach will be able to accomplish. But to automatically proclaim him as a failure is simply asinine. Coach Derek Dooley is now the head coach of the football program and school that I admire. I will let his actions as our coach supersede all of these preconceived conclusions that are scattered thru-out this discussion board.

Want to take a wild guess how long Saban's stint as the head coach at Toledo lasted?

You can go ahead and throw out at least 9 of his losses. Why? Because small schools like LA Tech and LA Monroe play AT LEAST 3 games a year for money, knowing they will lose. Why? Because the payouts for these supports the program. Without taking these automatic losses (except on rare occasions) they could not pay to support football at the school. They know up front that without these losses, they would not even have football at the school.

I like the idea of someone claiming to know something about college football having to use Google to learn about Dennis Erickson, then still managing to get it wrong. That's awesome.

Worst part is that he edited the last sentence but still missed the point.

Longer than mine would have.

It is a bit disturbing that UTK has just been treated like Wyoming, Idaho, and Toledo, though.
It's not to me. Coaching is a business. Most of the people on here pissing and whining about Kiffin would leave their current job for a better parking spot and 10 extra minutes at lunch.

+1:)

Personally, I like this hire. He is an energetic coach that knows how to recruit! What more could we ask for? Plus, he is a classy guy that will bring pride and honor back to this program that Kiffin took away!

I hope he can bring n a decent staff. I have absolutely no idea who this guy is. Is he involved more offensively or defensively? What type of O or D does he run or like? He might not turn out all that bad, but I am certainly not excited.

True. I've made a career out of company hopping. Not wealthy but I constantly send my resume out for positions. If someone wants to offer me more money, I usually take it. 3 years is about the longest stint I've had. I could be a coach.

Dooley was the 7th or 8th pick UT wanted. We'll be lucky to get 6 wins next season.

I'll still watch and root for the Vols but, guys, let's not pretend this is something to get excited about. He had a cumulative losing record at LA Tech. That says enough.

Who knows how Dooley will work out. He's got a few things going for him 1) his lineage (his dad was o'kay with us) 2) He's pretty smart as he has a law degree from UGA 3) He's coached under some pretty good leadership 4) He knows the SE backwards and forwards, has many connections, should do much better recruiting at UT than he did at La Tech. My question is, who does his mother Barbara root for when UT plays UGA?

still a bit sick...knowing that Kiff*ck is gone and can't do further damage makes me feel somewhat better.Knowing that Hamilton didn't act alone on this makes me feel better. Muschamp and Saban speak highly of Dooley, that's a small consolatation.

Then I come back to, "this is really the best we can do? With our facilities, the budget, the fanbase, the tradition....really? The guy from Airforce didn't want to come? The guy from UConn? Utah? Duke? Really? Really?"

And so on so forth, it's a wheel that I can't stop from spinning.

But the fact is there is not one damn person on this board who knows the kind of job our new coach will do. There are some real positives and some potential negatives on his resume. So maybe we could at least take a collective breath and wait and see what he does--if he can salvage this recruiting class that would be a major accomplishment in itself. Let's see what the staff ends up looking like and of course how the spring goes. Then let's see what happens on the field in the fall. He may work out and he may not but the hyperbolic howling in either direction before he has done one thing as Tennessee's coach is a bit insane.

Definately not my first choice but the guy did recruit good at LSU and hes a young offensive minded coach. Again not my top pick but we could be in worse shape, we coulda ended up with Calhoun. Every recruit woulda bolted if that happened. Woody Paige said today on ATH that his sources outta Knoxville says the 18 reruits we have right now are staying. Its just gonna be another wait and see thing guys, at least this guy shouldnt bolt after one year.
