Defense greatly improved or just reflection of competition?

I want to be optimistic about this team's defensive improvement from the WV game to ETSU. The Vols tackled better and they were in better position to make plays. Real improvement, or just vastly inferior opponent?

It's usually some of both.

We probably improved a significant amount from game 1 to game 2; most teams do, most players do.

But we were also playing a much easier opponent.

So: both.

Here's hoping our lads keep climbing the improvement ladder quick enough get the drop on Florida in two more weeks.

Go Vols!

Yeah, I would think that much better from first to second game is more about execution, and less about fundamentals like tackling.

ETSU is not just a small school, but a bad, small school team.

We will learn more over the next couple of weeks against a couple of other lousy teams

I mentioned in another thread earlier today it is a little scary to me young Gooden led the D in tackles with 8 but I could not find Tuttle, Bennett, or Phillips with 4 or more. That has to be cleaned up quickly to compete with UF. Let's not forget the gators were in that ball game with UK until the very end which they should not have been. We need our DL starters to become significant when the lights come on, not disappear.

UTEP is another opportunity to improve filling gaps, taking correct pursiut angles, wrap up tackling techniques b4 an angry, wounded UF comes to town.

UTEP, small as their DL is, they look like they can score points. Lots of them. Take them too lightly and it might backfire.

Improved, but not greatly. And the level of competition had a lot to do with it for sure. But I like how both Tuttle and Golden are playing on the inside and I absolutely love Bryce Thompson at corner, I think he’s gonna be special here.

Anyone else think Kirkland looks to finally be back ? West Virginia was embarrassing but he did have 10 tackles and last night I thought he looked really good

We had one sack, Mars Hill (liberal arts school) had three.

They are the worst team in the BCS. They might score 13 but they will not win. As I’m sure CJP is not taking any team lightly and that’s all that matters. I can take them lightly all I want and it doesn’t mean squat to the outcome
If the game

You and some of the others can calm down, nobody said we were good, just that they thought we improved from sucking ass to maybe just sucking. Its all good man.

OP asked a question and I answered. If you didn’t like my answer then that’s on you

Due much, much more to the inferior competition. We did look better no doubt. But still nowhere near what is considered even a decent defense in the SEC. Currently we are about 70th in the nation on defense and 11-12 in the SEC. We are seeing some improvement though.

Now this is not accurate. I was there and held his own most of the time he was out there.
incorrect. buchanan was out of position A LOT!

So much with he and abernathy, pruitt is playing them at the star position instead of cb and safety. abernathy is still screwing up

So 10 against NAU and 24 against UNLV means they can score some points? I guess your opinion of scoring points is vastly different than most.
