Defending Fulmer

Did you enjoy the Va Tech beat-down with Kiffin at the helm more? When will we win the number of games Fulmer did, get back into the rankings, and beat ranked opponents again, which should be so easy given how awful Fulmer was?

Was fulmer the second coming of christ? He had 10 good years, and I would say 6 underachieving ones. I was a full blown fulmer fan, and was even sad to see him go in 08, but I knew it was his time to go. He is a legend for UT athletics, but at some point the game catches up to you. The game had caught up to johnny in the early 90's. A lot people loved how bold fulmer's offense was in 92, but just as johnny, who is also a legend for UT, the game caught up to him. I really don't see why this is an arguement anymore.

You just changed the subject so hard that I think you blew a transmission.

Anybody that remotely knew anything about those teams in 2002 and 2003 knows there was a lot of internal turmoil and factions.

Day-yum people! Don't ya think it might be time to move on? Phil aint coming back. Liked him when he was here, but he's gone. Get over it. He was great for a while, then declined toward the end, and that is why he is no longer here.

Well, that's a good question.

90's? Could take a lil bit.

2000's? We are already there.

are you going to answer teh question that was posed?
How long till we're back to winning 9-10 games a season, beating ranked opponents, and winning bowl games?

So, i guess we will all agree to disagree. My question is, so now how long now does CPF get blamed for anything that goes wrong with the football team? I mean if we lose to Florida in 2016 is it going to lie on CPF's shoulders?

GBO

its easier to blame others than to take the blame. Just ask Obama

Once this senior class leaves, Fulmer's irrelevant to Tennessee's future.

What ranked teams were we beating in Fulmers last few years?

Part of our decline was not being able beat ranked teams, especially good ranked teams and not those on the periphery of the Top 25.

Hard for me to believe you were so elated with Fulmer after the 98 NC that you were happy with blowout losses to inferior teams in bowl games.

K-State in 2000 when players openly complained about having to play in the cold weather

Maryland - blowout loss that should have gotten Fulmer a kick in the nuts just for wasting an entire season of a talented roster, finished by a RB on his cell phone at halftime talking to friends/family.

Clemson - see above, another pathetic loss

2004 - beat an average TAM team

2005 - didn't qualify for a bowl

2006 - got beat by an average Penn St team that was more physical and better coached than we were

2007 - beat Wisconsin thank goodness. Of course we also got beat by UF by 39 and by a less than average Bama team with 5 starters suspended by 24.

But everything was great.

I mean at some point the new regime will have 'their' recruits, their people in place, and their system in place and will have to be accountable. Right?

The point some are trying to make to the Fulmerites who seem to think he is the only person who can ever coach at UT, is that whoever the coach was is going to have to dig out of a hole that was made deeper by Fulmer instead of being left a roaring machine that was ready to take off like Fulmer was able to take over in 1993.

I understand that. But how long can CPF be blamed? Nick Saban didnt take too long getting Bummer back, they werent exactly world beaters when he took over. So if we have the right people in place, and indeed we're better off, then I should look for an SEC title in a couple of years?

I can't speak for others, but the time for blaming Fulmer has passed. We are digging our way out of a hole that he didn't intentionally leave, but allowed to happen in spite of his love for the university.

Fulmer dug a posthole, Kiffin came in, dropped dynamite in it and blew it to smitherines.

One difference between Saban taking over at Bama and Dooley taking over at UT is that Saban had the decent luxury of being experienced and decently talented in the important positions you need to compete. He had an experienced QB, an experienced and talented OL and experienced DL. They struggled in other places, but Dooley had to have a brand new QB, replace 3 starters on the OL and replace pretty much the entire DL along with losing Eric Berry to the draft.

I would guess that will buy Dooley an extra year or two with the fans. Fulmer struggled in 94 but by the end of the year you could see the team growing and really getting better. I'm hoping for similiar things this year from us, but I'm not sold on Bray yet.

Good post. I hope the fans and administration will give him TIME. I think we CAN win the SEC East in 2012, but if we dont, we dont need to go running off the coaching staff and "knee-jerk". Im thinking 5 years until we have one of those "special teams".

show me where I said everything was great...
I'm still waiting to get better and hiring a coach that struggled at LA Tech, and pissed away two games due to penalties, and poor clock management doesn't instill alot of confidence

I think the point most of us are trying to make is that it wasn't going to get better under Fulmer without Cutcliff coming back.

And your hate for Dooley is misplaced and quite embarrassing. He came from LaTech and took them to their first bowl win before having tons of injuries his last year and had a tough season making his record a losing one. He's rebuilding UT football and starting with a strong foundation like the VFL program. However you seem so attached to Fulmer that you can't let go and realize that he is gone, there are other coaches who can and will get it done, if given the time.

Dooley has alot tougher road to get UT back than what Phil did in the 90's. That's not taking anything away from Fulmer. It wasn't his fault the SEC sucked at the time and what was he supposed to do? Not win? However trying to rebuild in the SEC now when you have 3 teams in the West ranked in the Top 10 and the previous years NC isn't one of them not to mention perennial powers UGA and UF along with last years East champion USCjr, it will be a grind.

However I, and even most in this thread who support Fulmer, can see that Dooley is the right guy to lead the turnaround. Except you seem to be openly hostile toward him for some reason.

Could be this year. I expect next year if Dooley is the guy.

Four. If he can't show he can win a title by 2013, get him out of here.

Neither did getting beat 169-52 the last two years by our main rivals.
