Defending Fulmer

Story also goes Fulmer wanted Mallet and the MI guys but Hambone refused.... I suppose it is who you listen to. Spence was #2.

The Chavis comment is ridiculous by any metric.

Paige was injured for half the season, and was still #3 at LA Tech, and I believe still caught more TDs than anyone there.

Creer would possibly be the starter even over Poole (although I like Poole a lot). He DEFINITELY would have been the #2 RB we so desperately needed.

Langley started on DL at another BCS school. We needed him badly, and he would have had a huge impact.

Coleman > Simms, despite what school and division he is at now. Even I think Fulmer was too high on JC. (BTW, I like Simms a lot. He's got a lot of character and is tough as nails. I'm still not sold on CDD bringing in Bray when he did in the USCe game)

This was what we needed to be in contention for the SECE. We would have aquitted ourselves better than the Gamecocks, but I won't say we would have won it.

As many have said, we weren't that far away (from the East) last year. Five players Kiffin ran off (or the Kiffin-effect ran off) would have been huge for our Vols (dare I say, one might still be alive today, which is more important than all the rest).

would have been nice to get Mallet and Malzhan

I don't know what universe you live in, but it sure is entertaining to read your posts and see what fantasy you are going to tell us about next.

It's the "fantasy" where we never spent a single season unranked all year, the "fantasy" where we played on broadcast TV or ESPN most of the time (not ESPN2 or regional networks or PPV), the "fantasy" where we finished in the top-10 in winning percentage from 1993-2008, the "fantasy" where we had beat Bama most of the time, the "fantasy" where we pulled more upsets than got upset, the "fantasy" where we had multiple wins over ranked opponents almost every season, the "fantasy" where we never had back-to-back 6-loss-or-worse seasons. It's called the Fulmer years, and it's undeniable in the record books. Maybe you missed it.

Mallett was always going to Arkansas. Gibbs is full of crap, as usual.

Did you see the awful list of 5 who would have made the difference? Good grief. It was almost as funny as Vegas looney's allsome "contributor" lists.

Again, put down the crack pipe.

Conveniently leaving out the fact that even though we started in the Top 25 in 2005 and 2008, we quickly fell from the ranks once everyone saw how poorly coached we were that year. Especially 2005 that was supposed to be NC contending team and didn't even make a bowl game and got beat by Vandy.

Where we had beat Bama most of the time? Right, except for when Saban got there and then he resumed his ownership of Phil. Beating our great 2007 team by 24 points with 5 starters suspended and only winning 6 games that year. Personally I'm enjoying the fact that we are actually competing Florida now instead of quitting and getting beat by 39 and 24 points in back to back years.

Multiple wins over ranked opponents every year? Ahem...cough cough BS..cough.

We pulled more upsets than got upset? Yet Fulmer was 10-23-1 against the better coaches in the SEC. So great, we were average. We were good enough to beat the bottom dwellers but nowhere good enough to stay in the same zipcode with Meyer and Saban.

We never had back to back 6 loss seasons, however I will channel the great utgibbs and say that was coming in 2009 whether he stayed as coach or not. Unless Cutcliff was coming back to rescue the program from the abyss that Fulmer had let it sink to, there was no use in prolonging the inevitable.

I love Dooley. I love the VFL program he is setting up and I love the foundation he is building to try and get us back on track to where Johnny and Phil got us from 89-2001.

what I've said is Fulmer hired Clawson, it's his responsibility, and it got him fired

Hiring Clawson was not what got him fired. Rather, becoming complacent, settling in mediocrity, and 'working like heck' got him fired. Oh, and getting out-coached time and again by coaches with inferior talent, and just getting outcoached period.

Why do you care? Are you old time Vol fan on USCjr's bandwagon. One thing that didnt get CPF fired was his record against USCjr.

Because I've followed UT enough to know what is truth and what is Fulmerite Myth. What you, Vegas, vol_in_il, and gibbs spew out is Fulmerite Myth.

The Sear's trophy I see when I'm back on campus sure looks real to me..

you want myths go read Harry Potter books, and leave the sports posting to football fans

Wow, I'm still amazed by the silliness of some of the comments still. I think alot of people hated on Phil unfairly, and a lot of people loved Phil more on emotion than numbers......and so it was a personal thing. The people who hated on him, in general did not respect what he brought to the program, and felt anyone could do better. They were wrong, and we've suffered since. The numbers do not lie.... Likewise many of those who defend him through thick and thin do so because of him being just a really "good" guy, and loved by his players, and remembering him in his prime. Clearly he had not been at that level for some time. Clearly he was NOT able or maybe just not willing to push it to the level Tennessee is expected to.

Was it time for him to go? maybe, but there is zero doubt our recruiting, record, and program suffered for the transition. Are we better off now? Unknown, we lost alot of people and alot of recruits we might otherwise have had, if Dooley turns it around we'll know. I think Phil himself hopes Dooley succeeds.

The fact is Fulmer's recruiting class with berry is still the best we may see for some time. Yeah he had slipped recruiting but I would say Chavis is partially responsible on that front as well. Both of them got a lil too comfy....

Most like Dooley me included, and hope he's the right one.....but really all the hate for Phil is just nucking futs. More about your own thin egos, then his actual record.

He was no Bear Bryant, and he was no Spurrier. However he had an impressive winning streak, and when he first came on he single handedly should be given credit as OC for turning Vols around under Majors when they were in a bad losing streak. That was why he got the Job after all. If only he could have stayed at that prime or grown more... He's sent ALOT of people to the NFL. very few coaches have sent as many players to teh NFL as Fulmer... No not just anyone could do what he did at TENNESSEE....how long did we own Alabama and Georgia under him? You don't think those programs were spending money like mad to get back on top? He was deffinately an above average coach. He is maybe elite as a person, as most of his players will tell you. Truthfully he's more of a die hard VOL himself then 90% of the fans in here..... But yeah, he let our competativeness slip, he chose to be a nice guy when a lil more discipline and fear were maybe what the players needed to get it done. Still....I'm not convinced yet Dooley will match his record, and I imagine Dooley would be pretty happy to get that far at the moment....stop being so classless to not respect what the man did for UT....Great coach....and a great Vol.

Alot of people quite frankly are not old enough to remember much of his best days...many are older but loved Majors and because Majors blamed him for losing his job they do too. (nonsense I was on campus when that went down, Phil or no Phil, Majors signed his own last paycheck when he started "losing it" at practices, and telling the wrong people off. ...and quite frankly should have thanked Fulmer for his last couple of years being winning sesons. ) ..I loved Majors. I still do.....but something made him mean and hateful...and it happened years before he left. There's alot of stories that could be said.... but I don't like people hating on him either....it's in the past.

Anyway whatever, flame me if you like. Fulmer will still have a street named after him, and he'll still have a lot of fans, and his players will continue to think of him as a second dad, and he'll still have a National Championship. The majority of regular fans that actually continue to go to the stadium season after season still like the guy......and while you online nubtards may think your the center of the VOL Universe....your not....that center is still among the Stadium faithful....

As a University we were spoiled with General Neyland...heck even Bear Bryant looked up to Neyland......The man was a Legend. We started with one of the absolute best there has ever been or will be.........but men like that....they are not likely to appear anymore in the world of sports. Not in todays buisiness first, honor second climate.

Dooley is funny, smart, has his accent down...and if he can some how summon some of his father's infamous fourth quarter luck.....we have a bright future.... what's done is done.....enough bitterness already....

Fulmer is gone as a coach....respect him as the Great Vol he was and still is and move on.....

Or just continue to be classless......but you just make many many fans (and players) have contempt for what we might otherwise have listened to had you not felt the need to unfairly attack an old friend of many at UT.

Funniest thing I've read all week. Outside of Berry, Moore, Walker, and maybe Jones, that class was garbage.

We've already had two better hauls since then.

Thank you. Doubt many of the dittohead knuckledraggers here will read it but it needed to be said.....again. Very well written and thoughtful. (Another reason it won't be read by many)

Funniest thing I've read all week. Outside of Berry, Moore, Walker, and maybe Jones, that class was garbage..

Plain stupid argument. We got solid contributions from all of the following: Berry, Moore, Walker, Jones, Martin, McKenzie, Rogan, and Willingham. We would have got quality contributions from Creer, Coleman and Langley but for Kiffin. We got decent contributions from Frazier and may still from Vereen. You generally aim for 4-5 high quality contributors, 4-5 quality 2-deep players, and 2-3 role players beyond that, and that's precisely what the 2007 class provided. It FAR excels the disaster of the 2009 class.

Best first post ever.

Welcome aboard!

(can I add "nubtard" to my repetoire, especially regarding those "nubtards" on here who think they are the center of Vol Universe?)

And surely Dooley has already used up all his bad fourth quarter luck in his first year! He does need to find some of his Daddy's lucky mojo.

Ohmygoodness GoF (and acolytes).

Looks like them times (and them polls) they are a'changin'.

Just like I said they would.

Game, Set, and Match.

So 3 recruiting classes later, we're still relying on Fulmer's recruits for our defense. What does that say about our recruiting post-Fulmer, if all of Fulmer's players are so terrible?

We should be relying on them but they are not here. Elite schools don't have to rely on sophomores and freshmen to field a team.

Again with this contribution silliness. Bandy has contributors too, but they aren't helping win titles. Maybe you should stick to analyzing the 14 deep on every team and potential signees to tell us who the best teams are.

Exactamundo (you like the Fonzie thing?) :clapping:

Those aren't the guys I had in mind.

Langley, Creer, Paige, Douglas, Coleman

I don't think we would have won the BCS NC last year, but we would have certainly been in the hunt and in the mix for the SECE with those guys here. Langley would have been our best DL. Creer would have been, if nothing else, the back-up RB we didn't have. Paige would have filled the hole left by GJ injury. Douglas needs no explanation. Coleman > Simms. These are all major contributors at their new schools (well, with the tragic exception).

It's a no-brainer to anyone who watches college football. We would have been a FAR better team with just those five guys to say nothing of Fulmer's 2009 class which was >> Kiffin's biggest bust in 60 years of SEC football.

Langley isn't the best lineman on a defense that was actually worse than ours. He wasn't starting at the end of the year. He's not a lock to start for his senior season. Coleman went to Chattanooga. Enough said. Paige would have been six or seventh on the depth chart here. He was third or fourth at Louisiana Tech. Creer was behind Toney Williams when he left.

Douglas... he's a different story and I'm not sure what in the world makes anyone think we could rely on him to have been playing last season.

The first sentence is a full-out lie. And why would we be satisfied with the offensive crew that helped Lloyd Carr get fired, anyway? Langley started at the fourth worst defense in the country... for less than half the season.

I guess since the addition of one person increased your ranks by 50% it sure seems that way.
