He did it several times against Oklahoma and again yesterday. Florida had positive yardage with an illegal formation and butch declines it. 1st and 15 or 2 and 8. To me you take the yards. Second and 8 isn't that far off schedule but 1st and 15 puts the offense off their normal play sheet. Just another small coaching thing that I have a hard time following what Butch is thinking.

You are not the only one.

Yeah, I was wondering why he declined it. I'd like to know if he has a "chart" for accepting/declining penalties.

I would REALLY like some insight regarding the declined penalties. I've never seen anything like it before and I've watched football for almost 30 years.

I think we should trust the Care Taker of the football program. He assures me he spent hours laboring over each penalty scenario.

If I remember right that was on Floridas 7 yard line so it would have been half the distance meaning only 3 or so yards. He made the right call to decline it and take the down as opposed to giving them 4 chances to gain 11 yards rather then 2 to get 8.

Butch leads the country in blown leads, piss poor timeouts, and declined penalties.

Like him if you choose, but evidence strongly suggests that he is a dumbass.

That one too but the one I'm talking about was on one of floridas fourth quarter scoring drives around mid field.

I remember this play, take the penalty and it's 1st and 12 or turn it down and it's 2nd and 7. Again Butch made the wrong call. On the plus side most Vol fans now realize the mistake in letting Butch run the show.

I remember it being from the six yard line. So it could have been first and 13 from the three yard line, or second and 7 from the nine yard line.

Admittedly that is a close call. But, I would prefer for them to be on the three with first and 13

It was at the 7 yard line, so it would only have been a 3 yard penalty, but I agree, I would have taken that one.

If the penalty is on a play that ends with something like 3rd and 7-8 or 4th and 5-6 you probably should decline. On first or second, especially if they are backed up, keep backing them up, build momentum for the defense and shake up their offense. But; that's just me.

It would have been 4 downs to get 13 yards from their own 3 yd line though, not 11 yds. I think you sacrifice the down and pin them further towards their own EZ.

To me, 1st and 13 from their own 3 yd line beats 2nd and 8 from their own 9 yd line.

Chance of a safety from the 3 too, not so much from the 9.

It would seem CBJ has jumped out of the frying pan (OU) in to the fire (lizards).
I only played 5 years in school. There is a lot of football I admit I don't understand with only Jr Hi and H.S football. But for the life of me, I can not believe our lack of passing.
Unbelievable with the talent we have. One dimensional football in the SEC is a recipe for a major DISASTER! I hate it for the team to lose. I hate it for the recievers who are not touching the ball.

I went back and looked it up. The play I was thinking of was an incomplete pass on floridas third scoring drive. Would have been 1st and 15 but was declined for second and 10 at the 23 yard line. They converted a 4th and 8 and scored 2 plays after that.

Exactly, except we didn't get much pressure on him all night long. But, I agree, but if the premise is to give yourself a chance to score points, a safety is much more likely from the 3 than the 9.

It blows my mind why we decline so many penalties. I don't know if his chart says it's unfair to back up the opponent or what. If I have a chance on 1 or 2 down to send them backwards 99% I would take it. Even if it's just a few yards. I would rather have 1st and 13 with ball on 3 than 2nd and 7.
