Declining penalties

Between the 20s, sure, but not with a chance to pin them closer to their goal line, IMO.

Yes, that was my thinking. Florida averaged 5.5 yards per offensive play. So, it is admittedly a close call. But, I would have pushed them back to their three yard line.

If I remember right that was on Floridas 7 yard line so it would have been half the distance meaning only 3 or so yards. He made the right call to decline it and take the down as opposed to giving them 4 chances to gain 11 yards rather then 2 to get 8.

No. On the 6. Stupid to decline.

1-13 at the 3 is better than 2-7 at the 9.

Absolutely dumb.

I remember this play, take the penalty and it's 1st and 12 or turn it down and it's 2nd and 7. Again Butch made the wrong call. On the plus side most Vol fans now realize the mistake in letting Butch run the show.

Inside their own 10 at that! Step off the penalty and bury them deep!

Chapter 1
When to go for it on 4th down.

Chapter 2.
When to go for a two point conversion

Chapter 3.
How to hold a lead in the 4th quarter.

Chapter 4.
How to defend a 4th down conversion.

Those are the chapters I would highlight to Butch.

If you consider playing for field position then you definitely want them 1 down closer to punting. Getting a safety or turnover is a lot less likely than forcing a punt and getting the ball at midfield. There were some bad decisions made but declining that penalty wasn't one.

After pondering it, I can also see that side of the story. What made me sensitive to the topic was the declining of those penalties in the Oklahoma game. That planted a seed of doubt going into the Florida game.

Again, if this penalty wouldn't have pinned them inside their own 3 yd line, I'd agree. You seem to be in the minority on this one, but we can agree to disagree.

Thanks for the civil debate guys. It's good to see fellow fans that don't take a counter point personally or stoop to insults. I'm seeing a lot of fracturing in the fan base on this board after this loss and it really sucks. We all love UT and want the team to succeed. I would like to see more respect for differing opinions and patience for those that overreact and speak from emotion. Being a Vol is something special and 100 losses to Florida wouldn't change that. Cheers fellas.:hi:

Don't you dare question ANALYTICS!

So jones is proving two things
1. this analytics stuff is out of control. you do have to look at stats but that's to help.
2. jones has no feel for the game. like a qb without pocket awareness. or no knowledge of when to change the play at the line. i don't expect peyton manning omaha but i don't expect a cue card coach.

I theorized on the OU game he declined (took the down) to help keep his defense fresher...trying to get a stop asap.

After UF, I really have no idea what his reasons are.
