DeBord was mentioned weeks ago as a possibility. Jones wasn't solely working on getting Richmond here, he can only contact a recruit so many times anyone. Plus, signing day was yesterday, so it's not like he just decided to look at OC candidates today.

Never said he was only recruiting Richmond. He apparently was also reviewing other candidates to include interviews with 4. An interview like that isn't like McDonalds. They'll generally take a day at least and usually more. There's at least 4 of the days since Jake left but more likely more. Then he was in CA to visit McKenzie... that's a 5 hour flight both ways. IOW's, his calendar has been pretty full.

For good or ill, announcing the decision in the few days prior to NSD would have made no sense. Announcing it ON NSD would make even less since that's a special day for the recruits.

These "reasons" sound more like rationalizations, including the QB coach part.

It is Jones' job to figure the QB part out. According to an article I read today DeBord has coached QB's. Even if he hasn't, it would be tough to have been OC as much as he has and know nothing about QB play.

The rationalizations IMO are coming from those who are condemning the hire before the guy even blows his orange whistle the first time. He has a good resume with tons of experience. He apparently understands and is willing to embrace Jones' system. Jones believes his presence will make the staff stronger.

My only "reasoning" here is that it is Jones' call and he made it. I have admitted that I don't know what so many of you claim to know... I don't know how this will turn out.


PS- I have had long arguments with people here that have tried to rationalize the loss to Vandy, Hendrix and Helm leaving, the poor results in '13 overall, the poor OL play in '14,... There are many who are condemning this hire who have spent a lot of times rationalizing bad things that actually happened... who now freak out over things that haven't happened.

Fulmer only worked with Clawson for a year while he worked with Cut many years, same with Debord and Butch.. Kinda makes sense that Clawson didn't work out well with Fulmer.. They didn't share the same ideas.. Same chemistry. See where I'm coming from?

The whole deal with my side is if your gonna risk it all on a hire why not hire someone flashy? Chances are your gonna crash and burn anyway so why not go all in.

My father and I were discussing this earlier and then did a little research on debord.

So our offense right now is the the zone read offense and is actually the inside veer adapted to a 1 back set? Debord ran the veer at Michigan and Miami. Sounds like a good fit huh!

Same chicken little fans had their panties firmly in a twist when Jones was hired. Said he couldn't win in the SEC, couldn't recruit in the SEC. Roster has improved since then, we've defeated ranked teams like Carolina and been competitive with teams with a lot more talent than us. Sorry but I'll trust the judgment of Jones over all the emotionally insecure fans in our fanbase.

Has he actually proven he can win in the SEC? He appears to be headed that way but I don't consider only 2 wins to SEC schools not named Kentucky and Vandy in two years as establishing as fact that he can win in the SEC. We should know for sure after 2015 though.

Fulmer had run the program into a ditch before Clawson ever stepped foot on campus. Clawson's mistake was thinking that Fulmer had enough clout to give him time to rebuild the O.

Yet, most agreed that the O-line was THE problem with the offense this season. If it gets fixed, then so does the offense. It's Butch's system not DeBord's.
