Dearstone/Kiffin

Mickey is a liar... he did just say "If you don't talk to us, don't talk to anybody..."

What a liar...

If I were Kiffin, I'd choose not to do an interview with MD as well. If not for how they spoke ab me before I was hired, it would be bc of all of the reasons everyone has posted thusfar. I'd like to see him do an interview with Hooker, or Hubbs more than anyone else on 99.1.

And I know this was posted elsewhere, but will west needs to have more on air time.

Maybe Dearstone is just trying to find a new "roommate" and not having much luck.

Poor Mickey...

At least he can go cry on Pat's shoulder and tell her about how CLK refused to talk to him first...

It's becoming more and more evident that CLK has done his homework.

To be honest, I'm already impressed with how Kiffin is handling the sports media here in Knoxville. Do a tv interview at halftime of the basketball game to get your name out to the fans, do a Vol Network interview, do a few national interviews to get UT back out in everyones mind, and don't touch the same people who were badmouthing you two weeks ago.

Maybe I've got it wrong but I thought the issue was that Kiffin hadn't done an interview with ANYONE on the Animal, not just Dearstone's show. I'll again say it just strikes me odd that a new coach has gone this long without an actual interview with the largest local sporting radio station in his new town.*

*So nobody is confused let me make something clear. For all I care Kiffin could run the team via satellite from a secret bunker in Patagonia as long as we're winning games.

You would be correct. He turned down interviews with John and Jimmy. I still think he did the right thing.

You reap what you sow. These guys deserve every bit of this.

In contrast to what MD was saying about the fans "wanting an interview" and the importance of the local media to Kiffin's job, I would rather seem him on the road and on ESPN. Lane doesn't need to sell the football program to UT fans like Pearl did basketball. The grills will be blazing and the stadium full come September, whether Kiffin plays golf with Mickey, or not. TRUE fans and supporters of the program are thrilled to see him on the trail grabbing up NFL-caliber coaches and stealing the staff and recruits of our rivals.

It sounds to me like the "Animals" are sour that they no longer have good ole' Phil in their backpocket to take up airtime with the same meaningless coachspeak. And, the notion that an appearance on their joke of show is somehow more important to Kiffin's success than making national media appearances ranks amongst Dearstone's most absurd comments. (I know there's a lot of competition there: Candace Parker being able to take on men's hoops players, him being able to hit Abbott, etc.)

So, let the radio goofs whine and complain like spoiled children. I'll take my coach in Urban's backyard with a few jabs at the washed-up Spurrier to go, thank you.

Go get 'em, Kiff.

True...but what would do our program a better service...talking to Jim Rome who is heard nationally, or a bunch of hacks who is heard by approximately 42 people during peak time in the morning?

He's been on Vol Calls with Bob, and he has been recruiting his tail off... if he had set up a priority interview with anyone at the Animal over the Jim Rome show, I would have thought it would have been a waste.

When you spend two weeks talking trash about a guy's resume in the open media, you should expect to get the cold shoulder when he actually get the job.

I'm not saying I would have wanted these guys to spend the two weeks prior to the hire kissing CLK's behind, but they all had their own candidates and their own agendas.

I agree with most of the sensible posters on here who say "you reap what you sow".

After their crybaby fest this morning...part of me hopes he never grants them an interview.

"They" was supposed to be collective for 99.1. IIRC, the only sportscasters on 99.1 that weren't so overly opposed to the hiring were Hooker and Adams... John and Jimmy were against it, as was MD. Jimmy Hyams went as far as saying he thought "it would be a huge mistake to hand over the program to Kiffin", and that he would be "utterly surprised if Kiffin was named HC".. It wasn't until after it was announced that they seemed to be ok with it... my favorite is how confident Hyams was it wasn't going to be Kiffin and how proud he was to "be the one who broke the news"... give me a break.

Hyams is a chameleon. He adjusts to whatever he thinks his audience wants. And his only job is to cover sports, and his most common answer is..."I'm not sure I'll have to get back at you." He is utterly clueless.

As far as the people who have said that Hyams isn't as bad as people think...they are right...he is worse than people think.

And I think if CLK does his "first" local interview with Basilio...it would be poetic justice.

Bassilio wasn't thrilled with Kiffin either....he was fighting Hyams over jock time with Kelly....I haven't listened to him in a while so I don't know how he has adapted to the hire.

I see the point you make but I'm not going to bust Hyams chops too hard for having an opinion. I mean, anyone on here ever had an opinion, including ones that turned out wrong?

I'm not losing any sleep over where and who with Kiffin interviews. As has been stated earlier I want him out recruiting. That doesn't mean I can't be a bit puzzled by a coach, and a brand new one at that, turning a chilly shoulder to the biggest local sports radio outlet.

Win games Lane and the fans will have your back no matter who you piss off.

The first problem is that this many of us listen to that crap in the mornings. They are terribly uninformed. For example: one morning they didnt even know what year the first "dream team" was....good grief. As far as im concerned Kiffen might be better off not talking to those people. If he wants to do one, please avoid the morning show!!!

He was a HUGE Kelly fan...but he has adapted well to the Kiffin hire.

Basilio would tell him straight up that he (Kiffin) wasn't his first choice. I've heard enough of his shows to know that Tony doesn't brown nose or tap dance to get interviews.

Well said and my sentiments EXACTLY. Almost makes one wonder if Coach Kiffin has a PR guy.:salute:
