DC Candidates?

Of those I think the most realistic is Pellini. IMO, he would be a good fit for Butch.

Very Unstable on the sidelines. In Nov, he had 30 full sec to drive 45 yds for a tie-game fg against NDSU, but instead, backed his team up to the 4 yd line when he/himself drew 2 sideline-unsportsman-like penalties (and still wouldn't concede minutes after the 2nd penalty -- and still was jowing with a Ref in center of field after the game).

what about Marion Hobby?

His name is being mentioned. Swain just raised questions about Marion only being the co-DC. Said you don't know how much responsibility he has with the defense in that situation, is he the one making the calls? Has he been the one designing the defense and schemes? Just some questions.

fair questions, but he's been on that staff for what, 6 years? they were able to lure Venebles away from OU, bumped him up to work with him, i have to think they think pretty highly of him in the upstate...

i wouldn't be upset at all if were Hobby.

that said, i do remember being fond of Wilcox. i did think he was doing a good job. so if there's an overture there, i wouldn't be upset.

i still think they're making a big push for Shoop, but i don't know that we'll get him.

i'm thinking it may come down to Hoke and Chizik.

but who knows. the more i listen and read, it's starting to sound like they didn't necessarily have someone in the bag.......

Agreed....Pellini is a nutjob. Almost as much as Muschamp.

Regardless of if its Shoop I want to be the first to say... "Shoop, there it is."

It's corny and I don't care

I could almost guarantee it won't be Pelini... Does he look like the kind of guy that would mesh well with Thig, Strip, and Butch... He is borderline psychotic

Clearly it's Shoop. Check the tweet

Chizik does make a lot of sense. You have to look at his entire history not just one year at North Carolina (as bad as you might think he was, they still gave up 115 yds less per game than the year before). He's worked with several of our defensive coaches and he has been an elite DC in the past not to mention his recruiting ability. Gene Chizik would be a grand slam IMO
I agree he is an elite DC for sure.

Rachel says it's Shoop.

His name really isn't being mentioned on other sites as a candidate. I hope he gets a legit look. It has been mentioned that Butch is in no hurry and will wait until the dead period or after to name a DC. This would seem to work in Hobby's favor since he will be coaching in an NC next week.

But idk...I still think we are going for an established DC since the stakes are so high.

It all makes sense now. A couple weeks ago butch said curt maggit had a spot to coach in the program. Maggit is our new defensive cordinator.

Heh, for the non-baseball fans, Paul Depodesta is the Harvard geek statistician behind the Oakland A's success as told in the book and movie, Moneyball (played by Jonah Hill in the movie).

When Butch says, "It's a process" and talks about analytics, he's clearly talking about applying Oakland-style statistical analysis ideas to football.

Of course, being successful at that is a whole nother challenge...it's not like there aren't tons of other coaches and programs trying some variant of it out these days. It's not a rarity like it was back in the Moneyball days.

I know you were being light-hearted about it, PJ, just fun to see all these links lighting up. :good!:

That makes more sense than LeBeau,Lovie, and some of the other names I've seen... Hell, even Hoke makes no sense

I'm sorry, but any coach that gives up the most rushing yards in bowl history need not apply... 650 RUSHING yards with a 3rd or 4th string QB is about as bad as giving up 70 points(Kevin Steele) or losing a game with a wr as QB

Even if Steele might have had a mini-stroke before the game?
