DC Candidates?

Justin Wilcox runs a 4-3 and was pretty good while here
He was pretty good at Boise and USC, as well. I remember watching much of the USC vs (undefeated, No.2 ranked) Utah game...and that defense played lights out. Pure domination.

For 48 hrs after the Oklahoma game and for a week after the Florida game....you could not find Jancek's name on any UT chat board without */%#* in front of it.......and we survived a putrid Gamecock team's comeback simply by devine intervention....and NOW>>>> people think Jancek walked on water and is irreplaceable. SMH

 huh? did you see the title of this thread? discussing potential replacements for the guy....hardly worship.
:hi:

Lorenzo Ward anyone? Just got picked up by Fresno St., perhaps a return to the SEC.

It's not going to be someone we expect. Just like with OC candidates a year ago, it's never the big name everyone is convinced it will be.

I am just not that impressed with his body of work. PSU was in no way a defensive power house this year and none of his previous ds were anything more than average even at vandy . Why do you think he is such a great upgrade? I think since you are such a fan you should tout all his positives .

Here is what his units have ranked in total d since Franklin hired him at Vandy:
2011-18
2012-19
2013-23
2014-2
2015-14

That should pretty much sum up why I and most others on here like him.

i don't know. everything i've read so far, which isn't that much, because i've never heard of him until today, says shoop is a good coach.

but i get the feeling that his "star ranking" has gotten a bump simply because he got offers from AUB and LSU...who both HAD TO HIRE REPLACEMENTS FOR DEPARTING DC'S....they were in react mode.

can you say with 100% certainty that shoop would be #1 on anyone's list if it's entirely up to you?

just some observations.

you might want to check the date of that article you posted...its a year old.

he still signed the extension, and has 2 years left on it.

it's not immediately relevant, given the age, but it does go to show to what extent PSU did go to retain him.

and he did turn down Auburn last month, and they offered, reportedly $1.5 million/year.

so..while it's a year old, it's still fairly relevant if he's a serious candidate.

I like Marion Hobby . I don't see Shoop as an upgrade at all . This is a big hire at a very important time period as everyone has pointed out. Hire the right guy and win the east next year. Hire the wrong guy and we will be talking about a chance to go to a bowl again. You win in the SEC with defense.

How in the world do you not see a guy with a top 15 defense his two years at penn state and top 25 defenses while at Vanderbilt as not being am upgrade? Im not being a d!ck, im just really curious

Not bad LOL . Look at the points given up by PSU this year . Look at the wins and loses and should I bring up they lost to Ga in the bowl game a team that we beat.

Nice, but I don't believe he has ever called defensive plays before. Probably not the best guy to bring in going into such an important season.

Which is probably evidence that he's the hire. DeBord - hadn't called plays since the Bush Administration, probably not a good idea to bring him in for a pivotal season. Seems close enough for an analogy, right?

But hey, the DeBord thing appears to have worked out. And Hobby is a VFL candidate, plus top ten recruiter in his conference.

Wonder if the bad calls on 4th down this year were a sore spot between them? We would have had 2 more wins if those had gone our way......
On that one go-ahead score by Florida, if Janzek had rushed 4, Grier doesn't have the time to stand in the pocket all day and wait for a receiver to come open. We win and end up playing in the SEC Championship game....all on one play. That had to get under Butch's skin all season long.

Watching an inept Florida playing in the SECCG and getting blown out by Michigan, had to rekindle that angst. Remember, Janzek kept playing the starters far too much...even he admitted that tendency. Mixing K-Mac and Tuttle (among other substitutions) into the rotation much more frequently would have helped the defense stay fresh when the chit got real, late in the 4th Qtr.

Butch will have to have a DC hired in the next few weeks to try and salvage a horrid recruiting class. We need to finish in the top 10 in recruiting or all our dreams and hopes will be extremely short lived. like no longer than 2017 season if we are lucky.

You and all your negativity you spew in multiple threads just pisses me off!!!!! Take it back to your vandy forum with all those piss poor attitudes...........

I can't see Shoop turning down LSU and Auburn AND taking a significant pay cut to come here.

The guy is a pipe dream for the position IMO.

My guess is he is likely holding out for a head coaching job in a year or two.

Boston VOL it may be an even trade between Jancek and Shoop but I don't think it would be an upgrade.

Northwestern had a top-15 defense and played in the same league. I don't necessarily want their DC either

I think he would likely be a good hire but can understand why some would be hesitant

What about bringing Wilcox AND Sirmon back?? I know both were very well liked for what they accomplished with very little talent at UT

I think there's a good chance if he can't get a DC or two that he likes, that he'll promote one of his own defensive coaches just so there's minimal changes on defense.

That was a big reason for the debord hire, to minimize change.

I'm not saying I'd be excited, I want a proven DC with the year 2016 can become.
