DAT Way

C'mon man. Tuesday is too early in the week for nonsense.

Agreed. Butch is a pretty details oriented guy, almost to a fault.

And I would be careful questioning another person's toughness. You never really know what he/she has been through until you have walked a mile in their shoes.

Details
Accountability
Toughness

Everything Butch lacks as a coach. Maybe it will finally work for him too.

Details-Coach gets routinely criticized for being too controlling and too detailed oriented, but now lacks attention to detail...

Accountability-Players are immediately disciplined for infractions other programs would bury, coaches and staff have been replaced and the head coach has visibly adjusted his methods (which I take as a sign of holding himself accountable), yet now he lacks in this area...

Toughness-well, yeah, nevermind, I just agree with Volly this is nonsense.

Butch is one of the most details oriented coasches I've ever seen

Accountability remains to be seen

He has to be one tough cuss to hang in there and stay positive after all these crap he's taken from fair weather fans over the past few years.

If you've been a UT fan in this century the last thing you are is fair weathered.

Details: gets out coached by mediocre coaches, D backs don't turn around for the ball after 3 years in the program. That is lack of focus on the details of coaching.

Accountability: routinely gets defensive with press about expectations and comes up with cornball ways to redefine success for his tenure

Toughness: played not to lose far too many times, that's being mentally weak. JMO

See the post preceding this one. How easily we forget.

agreed. the actions (letting assistants go, making changes to fix deficiencies in those spots etc...) don't get heard like some of the quips we've gotten from CBJ the past two years....

maybe better said, you could argue he's great at holding others accountable....not so much for himself, and Hart was not holding CBJ accountable for much of anything.

but...it just doesn't matter now. we are where we are. what happens from this point forward is all that really matters.

Everybody uses acronyms, nothing new. I really wish we didnt oversell them like we seem to do. But if you wins some meaningful games, maybe you dont have to do that so much.

I've wondered about that.

It's quite possible that half the teams in America are doing these same kinds of team building/improvement initiatives, but we never hear about them because our eyes aren't glued to the keyhole of the door to the ______________ program the way our eyes ARE glued to the keyhole of the door to the Vols program.

So what if it's a fairly common practice out there? No reason for us to think this is "oversold" ... heck, we'd never have heard of it in the first place if we weren't constantly checking places like VolNation for the tiniest scrap of news on our team. It's kind of on us for looking so hard for it. :)

Very true. Very minor stuff really, but anything new related to the Vols football team, I eat it up. If Jennings wears a different color cleat at practice, I wanna know about it.

Im sure every program uses this stuff. However ill have to disagree with your last paragraph. There was a video made and posters hanging up. It wasnt discovered by someone scrapping for news. Most coaches are all the same as far as this stuff goes, the only difference between most of them is how effective they are at getting their teams to perform.

I dont have a problem with the corny acronym, i just think the overselling is a compensation for lack of results on the field. There is little to no doubt (none from me) about CBJs efforts at work.

Come on, JP....you don't remember "Unfinished Business"from 2002?

I think a lot UT fans are sick of hearing slogans and want to see results. At the end of the day, there's nothing wrong with a slogan as most teams have a rallying cry or phrase. Unfortunately with UT, it never seems to make past that point.

A classic example is "We Are Family" from the 1979 Pirates.

No way, man. No way you or I or anyone else hears about DAT Way, or sees a hype video, or any of this, if we're not out on VolNation and other fan sites LOOKING for it.

Butch, his staff, the AD's office, the university administration, they're just doing the leadership thing. They're not 'overselling' anything. They're not paying money to put flyers in the mailboxes of everyone in Tennessee. They're not buying spot ads during the 6 o'clock news throughout the state, they're not getting the chamber of commerce to sponsor a DAT Way parade through downtown Knoxville.

They're just doing the leadership thing WITH THE TEAM, and we're noticing it because we're out here on fan sites actively looking for it. For any little bit of news.

That's not overselling. That's just them doing their job, and us over-finding. :)

Boca, the only fans who could even theoretically be sick of hearing slogans are a sub-set of those out on VolNation and other places, looking for any info they can get on the team. Because those are the only fans on the planet who know about the slogans.

I can guarantee you that my Dad and Mom, both huge Vols fans, have never heard of DAT Way, nor have they watched any promotional videos. Why not? Because they're not scouring the internet fan sites for it.

If you are "sick of hearing slogans," that's real simple. Stop looking for team news during the off-season. See? Simple. Don't blame Butch & Co for exercising leadership with the team.

They literally made a promo video for it. I have no issue admitting im wrong on an issue, but its really difficult to argue, when they made a promo video. Its on every sports site in America.
