Danny White CAN do nothing till April 1st

CKC will get another year, but she will have the hottest seat in basketball. She had better get better control of the egos and personalities of her players and get at least to the sweet 16. If not, she’ll be packing her bags. I hope it is the former.

Maria's board is always a bastion of positivity. So there are alternatives.
I'm not paying for a membership somewhere to be talked down to by a part-time "reporter" that acts the way she does.

I'm certainly not asking anyone to be positive about how the season finished. But I don't need the Chicken Little mentality that starts here at the first sign of struggle. Sports are what I do for fun. Interacting here used to be fun. I've been posting here since I was working with the football program in law school and was dating one of the softball players. I've watched as it's slowly evolved from fans having fun to people going after each other's throats over minor issues. Now, people can't even be happy with a national title contending softball team and actively cheer against our basketball program to hasten a coaching change that they'll be angry at, just like they were the last two hires. It's just not a fun place to be a part of anymore, even at the best of times.

LOL, every worst case scenario we came up for every stretch of the season has come true. And players are hitting the portal exactly as predicted. But move along, nothing to see here.
Toxic positivity is just as real as toxic negativity; at the end of the day, I like to stick to the facts and call it as I see it. And the facts are this season was an abject disaster, and our coach was the PR nightmare gift that kept giving for almost the entire year.

Is she even employed by 247?

I unplugged from this board because I don’t want to read the negativity. It’s even started on our softball team after two one-run losses to another top-5 team. There is no positivity here, even in good times. Not worth my time anymore.
Huh, I don't recall you bemoaning the negativity when Kellie's team lost on a buzzer beater to the eventual NC. Nope you were Kellie will never get it done; she has committed coaching malpractice; and the NIL shortfall is just an excuse for Kellie not being able to close deals.

But when it is a coach you support it is why is every being SO MEAN?? It is all so unbecoming!!!!

But for the record your coach has orchestrated the worst season in lady vol history, with historic losses, a mass player exist seemingly in play, and the national media writing obituaries for the program. Such circumstances do warrant some critical commentary.

Danny White has already told us she's doing a great job and she's staying. Not sure what else he could say. He is not firing her. Kim Caldwell (gulp) will be our coach next year. We are stuck.

Also, sickening as it is to say, the assessment may be that the damage is already so bad it cant get much worse. As one particularly callous ICU doc used to say to us when calling a code , she's not going to get any deader. Caldwell has already sped through every neg barrier, Maybe next year we eat the dirt while doing a thorough search and hiring an actual coach.
Stuck and in a metal box...this sucks 😕 😬

If you look back at my posts at the time, I was overwhelmingly supportive of Kellie until the day she was fired. Go back and look at my posts from 2024. They're all right there in the search history. I gave more than $25k each of her last two years to support NIL for transfer players she signed. Don't you dare tell me I wasn't supportive of Kellie Harper when she was Tennessee's head coach.

I was among those who wanted Kellie to get at least one more season. I thought maybe, just maybe, she could have one season in which she didn't lose primary players to injury and, maybe even more, I wanted to give her a chance to (finally!) be willing to make a change or two in her approach. I never got as down on her in regard to recruiting as a lot of people did, so I was NEVER in the "Fahr Kellie" crowd. Ever.

But in the end, when it was all said and done, I accepted it and tried my best to embrace the Brave New World of having an unknown "outsider" give it her best shot.

But this season I felt like our coach was overly dark, tone deaf and painfully, stubbornly unwilling to even try to see the obvious evidence that the flaws in her predictable system were what was giving opponents all those blowout wins, not the players she blamed for them.

So by the fact that in her post-NCSt presser she didn't even give her seniors a kind shout-out following their final game, this one feels different. I mean, I'm obviously sad our program (and coach) has reached a new low, but I'll be a-ok if Coach Caldwell moves on.

But it is what it is until it's something else. Hoping for good things in the future. 🥹

Well said! I feel the exact same way

Yeah, the seat will be hot as hell. I love a comeback story though.

We need you here, your posts are one of the main reasons I keep visiting these forums. I'm already distraught not having Rucker's twitter posts to keep up with Vol sports.

Buyout/Termination Terms (Post 4-1-26)
Based on the amendment to her employment agreement and the initial contract structure:
  • 50% of Remaining Base Pay: If fired without cause on or after April 1, 2026, Tennessee would owe Caldwell 50% of her remaining base pay under the 5-year contract payable in monthly payments till contract ends. If KC gets another job, her payments reduced by her new salary at new job.
Till April 1st, he can say nothing or he owes her 100% or $4+ million as she can say the decision to fire was before April1st. So does he eat the $2+ million and hire new coach and spend another $5 to 10 Million to restock roster or let her stay and just spend the $5 to 10 Million? Keep her and the program could suffer in fan support and national spotlight? Will former players, fans, and donors stand for that?
Knoxville news has story about Kim Caldwell buyout reduction April.
Bad more rising
Reduce from 4million to 2 after April 1

I haven't posted here a while but will just say... look at the records of coaches the first few years... here is shae Ralph's

Maybe White wants his legacy to be the A.D. whose contract skills saved the university lots of cash.

If good is the enemy of great, what is bad the enemy of?
I am glad you brought that quote up. It traces to a management book--Jim Collins, Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't. I suspect that white dropped the cool soundbite without reading the book.

His key point is that some companies are able to transition from being good to great by following these principles:

  • Confront the Brutal Facts (The Stockdale Paradox): Maintaining unwavering faith that you will prevail in the end, while simultaneously having the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality.
  • Culture of Discipline: Great organizations avoid bureaucracy by hiring self-disciplined people who don't need to be managed, but who work within a consistent system.
  • Technology Accelerators: Great companies never use technology as the primary cause of a transformation; instead, they use carefully selected technology as an accelerator of momentum once they have already found their path.
  • The Flywheel and the Doom Loop: Success comes from a series of good decisions and disciplined actions that build momentum over time (the Flywheel Effect), rather than a single "miracle moment" or radical change program (the Doom Loop).
If we look at the current situation, CKC is certainly strong on maintaining "unwavering faith" but not so good at confronting the brutal facts of her current reality.

The culture of discipline seems to be lacking. Note- Collins says that the CoD starts with the leadership not the line workers.

The Flywheel versus Doom loop - putting all your eggs in a "revolutionary system" that is very hard to learn and implement correctly and that no other leading program uses, seems kind of doom loopy, rather than building excellence incrementally over time.

Maybe, but I think it’s more I want to leave, but a new Coach might be able to convince them to stay.
IF he's going to make a change it needs to be by April 6 to recruit the portal at the fullest. No doubt it's a tough decision to make. I hate to see a young coach go through this type of situation it's not a easy job when you have rebellion.

Yes, sooner would be preferable, the new Coach needs to start recruiting. Don’t know if there was a rebellion, but KC‘s words in front of the media hurt her fan support over and over.
