Gary Danielson of CBS was interviewed about the upcoming SEC season. On Tennessee he stated:

right now they are the least ready to win the tight games. That includes their fans, their players and their coaching staff. That is a big hurdle. They will have to win more than one of those tight games

Strangely, he likes Missouri as the dark horse to over take TN and win the East:

Who is the other dark horse?

Danielson: Missouri. I think they are going to be much better at quarterback because Drew Lock has grown and will continue to grow under (new coordinator) Josh Heupel. Now Josh has to make sure he doesn’t get away from the running game. That combined with another really good defense gives Missouri a chance in every game they play.

Is Gary crazy or does he have a point? I think he may be right at least regarding our fans (not being ready to win tight games). If the UF game is close in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter the tension in Neyland will be intense.

Then we'll just blow everyone out. Problem solved

I really think you may have a point when it comes to UF. If that game is close at the end, our collective memories of 11 years of heartbreak may make it hard to over come that hurdle in a close game. May need to win comfortably in order to pull that one out.

Based on the teams experiences last year, I would say we may be the most prepared. When he mentioned Miz being a dark horse......he lost all credibility.

He knows the Tennessee fan base generally do not appreciate him very much, and so he's getting his licks in while he still can.

The "fans" inclusion is the only clue we need to see that he's being illogical (as Fade pointed out).

Two programs with A LOT of off the field issues tAm and Missouri seem be getting some love from the talking heads. A&M suspended a couple of coaches last week and Missouri lost their interim AD. Awful lot of superfluous noise around those programs. Maybe it doesn’t effect on field play but usually this much smoke causes some hiccups. I don’t know enough about the Missou QB to comment but Trevor Knight looks like a band aid on a pretty big wound. His whole rep is based on that one great game against Bama in the bowl game. I just don’t think he can be consistent enough to make them contenders; spoilers yes, week in week out good, don’t see it happening. Chief will make their D better but they won’t be elite. IMHO they will be battling MS State and Auburn for the cellar in the West. Here’s hoping Knight doesn’t have another “career” game against the Vols when they travel to College Station. It is a trap game for us falling between Georgia and Bama. Butch needs another ugly win like last year at Missouri. I would take 19-17 Vols right now in a skinny minute.

UT hasn't had a full team on the field since 2004. Way to many holes for coaches to fill to rate them on coaching ability. There is a lot of talent out there this season and few holes to fill. To me that means we are finally fielding a competitive team but there are many other teams in our league that field competitive. Yes, compared to the previous 10 seasons, it seems like we are loaded but its going to take good coaching to win any championships. I predict the coaching will be there when needed.

How exactly do fans impact tight games?

reading through this thread and knowing whats coming in this thread proves his point. This fan base is going to have to grow up too. We are not a championship fanbase. We are emotionally immature and unprepared. There have been a lot of programs brought down by the fanbase. LSU almost recked themselves last year as example.

Danielson is an abject idiot.

Mizzou doesn't have the talent to compete. They just don't.

Since he doesn't reason.... it would be pretty pointless to try to critique his reasoning for believing UT is the least ready to win close games.

He's got a point. Battered Vol Syndrome still exists. Look how many UT fans are saying they won't believe UT can beat UF until they see it happen. And look how many are saying we'll go 9-3 or 10-2, because the team can't make it through that tough 4-game SEC stretch. UF and UGA fans seem far more confident than UT fans--- with far less reason.

Mizzou, though-- that's just crazy talk.

The Mizzou pick was a dark horse pick. Not who he thinks will win the East.

Take away UT, UGA, & UF...that leaves UK, Vandy. USCjr., & Mizzou as dark horses. He picked Mizzou out of that 4. Not that odd of a pick.

I think he's right about the fans. Wrong about the players. I'm unsure about the coaches.

Just look at all the whining and moaning on this site over the summer. All the I'll believe when I see it talk about Florida. All the running away from expectations.

Tennessee fans are not ready to power their team through a close game. Especially Florida as others have mentioned. Our only hope is to blow them out September 24. Because I know if the game is close, the negative energy from the Tennessee fans will cause the players to choke.

There are only two ways fan bases impact a program and I'm talking us average fans not million dollar donor fans. First and foremost we can quit buying tickets and attending games, and two in certain situations at home games we can make enough noise to make it harder for the visiting team to call signals. Otherwise its all Sound and Fury Signifying Nothing. As for LSU's fan base almost wrecking their program last year I would say they helped save it by coming out in support of Miles when the "donors" and AD wanted his scalp.

I didn't know our fans immaturity cost us a 2 TD lead vs Oklahoma and Arky......wow

The first close game we have is going to scare the piss out of me. Not sure my heart will be able to take it.

I am sorry but Missouri is absolute garbage and sucked out loud last year. They also have to replace Gary Pinkel. Normally I like the insight that damn offers ( Verne not so much because he has no insight) but he is way off on his dark horse pick.
