D'Andre Payne

That make's what 8 defections? Glad he had 32 in the last class. Regardless of the reason, that is a fair amount of attrition in a short amount of time. I hope the trend will stop or at least slow down.

It does hurt depth a little but most of these players were non contributors. Helm, Hendrix and Scott are the only ones that could have been difference makers.

Hendrix is still the only one that I regret losing. Evan at that, we have solid defensive ends coming in next year.

Didn't we get Jaylen kind of late in the process last year? I always looked at him as filling a spot where there was a need but figured he would end up getting recruited over. Anyone know if or how much Payne played this season?

Look at the past recruiting classes for top schools. It happens every year. Nothing new here. Happened to UT when we were winning before. This is expected...

All were 2nd year players or less, "contribution" isn't expected. And playing constitutes "contributing" in my book. Contributing doesn't mean putting up all-SEC statistics. If that were the case, then they would all be starters, and if starters were all that was needed then we'd have 24 players on scholarship rather than 85.

How many 2nd-3rd stringers, at any other school, who spell the starters a few plays every few drives put up big numbers?

Be careful. You can be subject to a gang attack here for suggesting that the staff should do a self-critique in response to a bad trend... much less that they might bear some "blame".

Another DE. I believe that makes 5 of the 7 guys signed by this staff as DE's that are already gone. But... I'm sure someone will drop the hammer now and tell me how stupid I am for thinking this might be a problem that the staff must fix if UT is to be successful....

Really? Which of those schools lost 70% of the DE's they signed within the first two years?

It is expected to lose players. I don't think the staff believes that having 5 of the 12 who have left already coming from DE is something you "R-E-L-A-X" over. I'd say they're probably pretty concerned.

But please remember that you said this wasn't a problem if a lack of depth at DE keeps UT from winning over the next couple of years. It can't be a "reason" if it isn't a problem.

Miller got fairly significant PT. With an already thin position group, his leaving is both mysterious and painful.

How can the "solid" DE's coming in be a solution? A reason/excuse used for not winning more this year was that UT was too young. Now guys with playing experience are being traded for Fr again... and that somehow fixes it?

ST's and mop up I think.

We are more than likely signing 4 talented DE's and 4 highly ranked DB's in the 2015 class . We are fine . Sometimes guys just don't make the cut . Lack of depth will no longer be an issue after next year and will not be even close next year to what we dealt with this season . If you want to have a meltdown ,go ahead but it is unwarranted .

The point is kids leave because they won't play because of better talent or they give up football.

So you now contradict your point about being glad Kamara left Alabama, since your logic is Kamara wasn't good enough to be the 6th best RB at Alabama or wants to "give up football."

I get what your saying but I'm still not worried. What happens when you sign 30+ recruits? You hope some turn into superstars and the rest stay for depth. If not then replace the ones that leave because some will leave. That's the nature of college football these days. If they were leaving because of something other than playing time then I'd be concerned. My thought...If you can't compete and win the job then more power to you if you want to chase your dream some where else. If your not willing to put in the time and effort then best of luck to you. Next man up.

Yep! And some people just don't get it! They want to compare attrition to other schools! Very few other schools are attempting to recover from what we are attempting to recover from. If you can't compete, i don't want you here....even if you stay and provide depth.....if you can't compete you're dead weight as depth anyways!

Nope, only if you spend hours on end repeating the same old dribble as you are the messiah trying to put out the word that something is wrong!

The cream of the crop stays! Depth takes a while to regain! WE WILL NOT GET BACK TO WHERE WE WERE IN TWO OR THREE YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think you are stupid and don't have a hammer with me, but i do think you are very unrealistic!

Which of those schools, any schools, are going through what tennessee is doing through now? None!

They are smarter then us in this regard....they probably saw it coming!

and Butch is already making excuses for next year. "we will probably be one of the youngest teams in football next year".

You are proof that years if membership here have absolutely no relationship to common sense!

He made the statement....so what.....it is probably true!
Why do you automatically make it out as an excuse?
It could be coach speak....or it could be just factual information!

One of is better than the youngest. I'll take it. Also, it means we are getting better talent. Speaks volumes of how poorly Dooley recruited. Reminds me of when Saban took over after Shula, except Shula recruited way better than dools.

I completely agree for the most part. As I stated Helm Hendrix and Scott could be difference makers. I really didn't consider Henderson or Paulk since they didn't leave on their own accord and were never really part of the team this year. I plainly stated that it will hurt depth a little. I personally don't see Jaylen Miller ever being better then 3rd team and after watching Payne this season I just don't think he's an SEC caliber CB. I do think the first three mentioned players are tough to lose and I hate it. I never expect great things from true Freshman but there are some that coaches immediately know were misevaluated in the recruiting process. Not sure any of these fall into that category but Paul Harris would be an example.
