Da Reds thread

get a clue. signing votto was one of the stupidest things he did. that is way to much for a small market team. even phillips i'm not to sure about. latos i liked because he is younger. last year, before the year everybody knew what needed to be fixed yet jock did nothing. then went through the trade deadline and did nothing. i figured with the huge signings we are in the win now stage and when you leave stubbs out there to whiff acouple hundred times it makes little sense. 3 years after he sees the problem he fixes it, get a clue. the guy may have cost us a world series by putting so much faith in a guy that can't hit. atleast though he finally came around though after 3 years. i also forgot to mention that we still have krusty as manager and i'm hoping we will be good enough that he can't even screw it up.

Joey Votto is one of the five best hitters in baseball.

That was a good deal for Cincy.

great hitter probably best in the national league. its the money and how long the contract runs is what i don't understand. what happens at age 34 when he starts to go down. we still have another 6 years of 20 plus million a year. with the prospects we have in the farm system i think i would have offered a shorter contract in terms of years or let him play out the final 2 and let him go. in the short term it looks great, but long term for a small market club that can't eat salary it will kill us. thats the reason i said we are in the win now mode.

What's wrong with win now mode?

And Votto will make it up in the first five years of his contract.

And Votto was going to get 8-10 years on the open market, and possibly $25M a year. So you saved potentially $30M over the course by giving him those two extra years.

thats one way to look at it. he could also be a good ballplayer into his late 30's, but odds are against. like i said if we were the redsox or even the white sox i would be all for this. we are the reds though. the last time we signed somebody like this it was one of the biggest busts in baseball history. nothing wrong with the win now mode, but he still had 2 years on his contract. we have to be like tampa not the yankees. one huge contract like this could hurt if it doesn't pan out long term, like griffey.

Sad to hear about Mason Felt's accident and him losing his father in the crash. What a truly awful week it has been. Hope he can recover physically and more importantly recover from the loss of his father.

Bad deal all around. Sorry to hear it as well. First just hope he survives. Then the rehab. He needs our prayers.

My take on our Reds. WJ has done a great job as usual. The deadwood/head case in the line up has been filled with a quality player, Choo, who in essence is auditioning to stay or be a free agent. So he will be giving his all. With Luddy, Bruce, Choo, and Heisey coming in as needed we are strong in the OF. Add in Frazier when needed with Hannahan to sub in at third.

Votto was the linchpin to all of this happening. He is not a Junior being an unproductive albatross around their necks. If he is hurt he starts going with contact hitting and is still a .300+ hitter. Bruce remade his physique last season with a trainer. It takes a year or so to adjust and he has been working on being better at contact hitting and the strike zone. Add in BP, Masher, Frazier (for a whole season), Choo, Hannigan - even Cozart will get better as a hitter. Very strong line-up that can score some runs. No easy outs now.

WJ knows how to deal and improve a club. These longer term contracts with guys like Votto, Bruce and BP are telling the other great players we have a nucleus committed to winning in Cincy. The money for the team to pay it comes from winning. Cincy fans always come out and spend money when the Reds are in the thick of it. Drove up I 75 for it last year and will again this year.

Pitchng, D and consistent reasonable run production are what win championships and the team is really good now in all respects. The only problem in my mind has and always will be Dusty. He has proven to be a wannabe over a lot of years. His decision making is just strange to non-existent at times. The team is so good sometimes they can bail him out. But when it is playoff time and the opponents are fully focused it gets intense, and that's when it all heads south because he can't see the bad stuff coming, much less make the right call on what to do. He is so hung up on his personal MO and process he forgets the object is to win every game that can be won all of the time, but especially when it matters most.

Choo is a Boras client and he will no doubt be motivated in his contract year but he ain't auditioning to see if we'll resign him. There's a 0% chance we'll be able to afford him after the season.

Probably true - forgot about Boras. IMO this is just a swing year until Hamilton is out there anyway.

Saw Hamilton a couple of times when Pensacola played the Smokies early last season. Dude has some serious wheels and I was not disappointed in his ABs. They clearly have him focused on hitting down on the ball and up the middle. Even during those games it seemed to me he would be better defensively in the OF. He was really too loose at SS. You would never see what BP and Cozart have together up the middle. But once he gets comfortable in CF - my goodness he could be special.

allstar game coming to cincy 2015!!!!!!!!!!

Just in time for Billy Hamilton to play in it as the starting CF. Dude is going to set Cincy on fire starting in 2014. Secretariat of the basepaths.

Like what's happening with the roster. Dusty needs to adjust instead of having the players adjust to his ways. Different team with different strengths. He needs to let go of his penchant for always playing veterans even when they are slumping. The 40 man roster is pretty dang deep. He also needs to play small ball more.

Below is off the Reds website and relates to the point I was making last season about Bailey and Leake. Bailey has the stature to get this done. Don't know how well it can be done with Leake. Much more upside with Bailey.

"The biggest thing is I was healthy," Bailey said. "Now I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do to stay healthy. That's why I had such a good season. I was able to stay on the field."

In 111 career starts, Bailey is 38-33 with a 4.50 ERA. His early Major League career was rife with setbacks due to poor performance and injury. In his three full seasons from 2009-11, he never had more than 22 starts in the big leagues.

Bailey has already resumed a throwing program and will begin working off of a mound for the first time this year on Tuesday.

It was during the previous offseason that Bailey changed some of his routines. He added several pounds and some muscle to improve his durability.

"I know the eating a lot and getting bigger got a lot of emphasis," Bailey said. "But nutrition as an athlete plays a big part in what we do. Once I improved that part and went through the changes, I saw some good results."

The discussion related to both of them being 6 inning pitchers. Bailey figured out he had to improve his stamina and strength, which is legs (quads) and torso driven. So he made the changes and finished strong. Now they are rightly working on a long term deal with him to keep him in Cincy. Leake did nothing and bombed out as the season went on. Don't know what he has done in the off season, but if he hasn't built his strength I would be for moving him along in package deal.

No small ball allowed in gabp

Not arguing. Don't want it either. Kind of a misstatement on my part.

Just want to see them moving runners and taking the extra base - more aggressive on the basepaths to go with walks. More hit and run. Even in the BRM days Pete, Joe, Ken, Sr. Davey, Cesar, etc. were on the bases for the big guns to bring in. Pete and Joe would take every base they could get and walked frequently. Even KG, Sr. has an OBP of .400 during the WS seasons with 60+ walks.
