I have decided to ignore his time at Duke and focus on his time at Ole Miss. I feel his time at Ole Miss is a more representative of what he will bring to Tennessee due to both schools playing in the same conference, having similar admission standards, and recruiting the same players.
Recruiting
Recruiting is the lifeblood of a program. So how did it go for David during his time at Ole Miss? Not very well.
Note: I am sorry but Rivals started in 2002, so that is the farthest back I am able to go.
2002 – 33rd Nationally, 10th in the SEC
2003 – 38th Nationally, 9th in the SEC
2004 – 30th Nationally, 8th in the SEC
Offense
David Cutcliffe is known for his ability to develop young QBs. He coached both Peyton and Eli Manning. Notice that David never had offense ranked in the Top 20.
Note: Once again, my records do not go back far enough, so I am missing 1999.
2000 – 74th Nationally, 8th in the SEC
2001 – 37th Nationally, 4th in the SEC
2002 – 76th Nationally, 5th in the SEC
2003 – 22nd Nationally, 1st in the SEC
2004 – 77th Nationally, 8th in the SEC
Defense
Defense wins championships, offense wins games. Well, it’s probably for the best that Cutcliffe never made it to any championship game, because he never had a defense that could win them.
2000 – 59th Nationally, 10th in the SEC
2001 – 62nd Nationally, 9th in the SEC
2002 – 41st Nationally, 8th in the SEC
2003 – 59th Nationally, 9th in the SEC
2004 – 66th Nationally, 9th in the SEC
Performance
Really, when it comes down to it, W’s and L’s is all that really matters. How did David do at Ole Miss? Well his average season was 7-5. Yep, you read that correctly, seven and five.
Okay, so how did he do against Tennessee’s Rivals? Cutcliffe was actually 4-4 against Florida and Alabama while at Ole Miss.
How about that In-conference record? Cutcliffe was an unimpressive 2 games over .500. Bringing home a 25-23 record in-conference.
Number of 10+ win seasons - 1
Number of SEC West Titles – 1 (Tied)
Number of Outright SEC West Titles – 0
Appearances in the SEC Championship Game – 0
SEC Championships – 0
Appearances in a BCS Bowl – 0
BCS Bowl wins – 0
Appearances in a National Championship – 0
National Championships – 0
That is right Ladies and Gentleman. David Cutcliffe has never been to a championship game at any level. Even thought Cutcliffe had a future Super Bowl winning QB at Ole Miss, he never competed for a championship. He would be an incredibly unimpressive hire for the once proud Tennessee Volunteer Football program.
I know some of you may sit there and say that Cutcliffe will bring you some stability, but at what cost? How much longer can this program sit around clinging to the 1998 National Championship? Are we destined to be like the Georgia fans, still reminiscing about 1980 and Hershel Walker? Are we destined to be like the Notre Dame program that talks about how many championships they won, when players will wore leather helmets? Our two biggest rivals have won 5 SEC Titles and 3 National Titles since our last one and they show no signs of stopping.
I will put this bluntly, this would be a disaster of a hire for the once respected Tennessee Football program.
