Currie Releases Statement

Firing Currie is not going to get us a good football coach. The mob mentality has poisoned the well. Would I rather have Gruden, Mullen or someone equal? Of course, but they were never coming here. They see what they will face if they lose a couple of games. Was Schiano my choice? No! But the mob decided he is guilty and he is not a good football coach. The mob is now calling for Currie's firing. Other prospects are running as fast as they can from the lynch mob. Many of the good recruits will too! The mob did themselves proud.

If your kid was at a day care where sexual assault had been occurring for multiple years, and then you moved your kid to a new care, and they were looking to hire a worker who was there during the times where the abuse was proven, would it concern you? It's one of those situations where you err on the side of caution. I have no idea if Schiano had any involvement at all, but I certainly do know that people that are in the inner sanctum of businesses know a LOT of things that go on. To say that he never heard a credible rumor would be unlikely at best.

It's pretty clear how this all played out. We were never considering anyone else. An expensive, explosive hire? It was Schiano all along. Peterson, Gruden, Mullen, Leach, Kelly, Frost....all BS. We weren't late to the coaching search dance, we never made the damned trip! Now that everyone has their raise and all the other programs have made their hires, we sit here with slim pickings. No choice but to pick from a coordinator or lower level, up and comer type. Not another dime to support this program until we see commitment....true commitment to doing something real to get this program back where it needs to be. No donations, no season tickets, no merchandise, no nothing until we see results or better yet, a dissociation of the Haslam family from my alma mater and Currie on his way somewhere else. Wont mean a thing to UT, but it will make me feel better. Tired of throwing money at UT only to have them continually and without fail piss in my Cheerios and tell me I have to like it.
And please give Chancellor Davenport a seat on that plane out of town...if she was the one that stopped the Blackburn hire!

Reply to what I posted, then, kiddo.

It also appears that this is more than 'some whiny fans' when you've got 70+ state legislators, ranking members of the AD, and more up in arms.

Delusional troll.

I'm not a troll in any sense of the word, just because I don't subscribe to the absurd groupthink pervading this forum currently.

Last time I looked state legislators were not experts in the game of football. And, quite frankly, the fact that so many of them gave the nonsense accusations against Schiano any time shows a complete lack of awareness and legal savvy. If Schiano has the resources he should sue the lot of them for defamation of character.

The hysteria over Schiano is/was silly and petty. He wouldn't have been a spectacular hire but he would've been a decent hire in my opinion.

Let's get things straight, Schiano isn't at all implicated in the Sandusky scandal. The only evidence against him is some third-rate hearsay that wouldn't come close to being admissible in court. He's been vetted for jobs, big jobs, and some stand-up guys have had his back for a reason. This is just a nonsense angle that many fans on here have abused to defame a decent man's name. It's shameful. I am ashamed that fellow Vols fans have done this.

OK his record at Rutgers isn't great, but it's also a bit of a misleading angle. He turned that programme around from a perennial loser to a team that consistently put in winning seasons and won bowl games. He's shown a good eye for talent with limited resources to recruit there. In a much more ripe area with more recruitment resources I think he would've put in a consistently competitive team here. Granted I don't think we would've challenged 'Bama with him at the helm, but I think the programme would've moved on the right track with him.

The NFL angle is ridiculous. Some great college coaches have failed in the NFL and vice-versa, it means nothing.

Let's be honest, the hysteria over this potential hire has been ridiculous. Schiano wouldn't have been the terrible hire many of you think, he would've been solid.

Currie should've simply stuck to his guns but now he looks weak and feeble for backing down. He has annoyed both sides and his position is probably untenable.
Read what Urban Meyer tweeted, maybe it wasn’t a great fit..

No but firing Currie will help nip the problem closer to its roots which will help down the line.

If there is a case for defamation any lawyer would take the case for a cut of the damages. But that would be a two edge sword for Schiano since there is already testimony out there that he did not report what he witnessed.

Fulmer interim—- done!
Or Blackburn who is free at the moment

I said this last night. Get Blackburn on the phone and ask him what his requirements are and meet them without question.

We could have Blackburn in here by the end of the week and only then should the coaching search resume and without any input from Haslam.

This wasn’t just a crap choice for Vol fans, but the entire SEC and other football fans. While reading the LSU forum, they hate our AD almost as much as we do. We kept blaming the coaches, but now everyone realizes it’s the higher ups. What will it take to get him out?

What a bunch of CYA. Did a Haslam attorney write this garbage?

1. Fire Currie
2 Fire Davenport
3. Tell the Haslams to get lost. They have been a cancer to the program for years.
4. Clean up this mess--the citizens of Tennessee are tired of doing your job.

I would not have backed this hire nor do I believe it would have been a decent hire I believe 3-9 seasons 4-8 seasons and nothing better.
My money will be spent on other things besides anything University of Tennessee.
Nor will I let my children go there
If the University decides they want to be winners and go get someone that will excel only then will I change my mind
By the way over 50 years as a vol fan
Watch a lot of football in the stands and at home but I won’t support a sub par coach any longer

Essentially says....You trusted me to get a great coach. I did get a great coach. I don't care if he is speculated to have witnessed child rape and not reported it. You ruined it. Be Patient while I get you you some other loser.

Lol, yep that's what he's saying.

This hire was an absolute slap to the face of every fan of UT football. He was a we don’t care what the fans want, they are all idiots and will back anyone we bring in and they will continue to fill the stadium and buy merch with continued mediocrity.

He was never going to a win anything here. He was gonna be a 7-5/9-3 coach every year and he was probably gonna be dirt cheap compared to the better options. Currie was getting his pockets lined by the haslams for this hire and the fans and winning be damned.

Beverly Davenport Speaks...

“I deeply regret the events of yesterday for everyone involved. The university remains steadfast in its commitment to excellence, and I look forward to John Currie continuing the search...”

Fire this clown.

A statement about the search and his background and the reasoning behind the hire should have been released yesterday with an official announcement of the hire. Things may have worked that way. I would still be against hiring Schiano but may be willing to accept it - similar to hiring Kiffin. The way it was done showed a lack of leadership, a lack of regard for the fans. What about all that - any announcement will come from me - talk from Currie a few weeks ago? Instead we get crap announcements and don't even know whats going on. Pathetic leadership.

Bingo. Did Mike Mcqueary or Tom Bradley provide written statement that this is false? If not then this hire is no Bueno!

Wow, Davenport's statement is really telling. She intends to let Currie ride this out.

This is unacceptable. Currie didn't just make some little misstep along the way. He's horribly bungled every single little detail of the entire process, up through that tone-deaf statement of his. He's made it clear that he CAN'T be trusted to make a single decision for this athletic department ever again.

It's time to make sure Currie is gone. Contact the chancellor. Contact the president. Contact the trustees. Money talks louder than anything else. If you know any boosters, get them to put some pressure on the university.

And if anybody else at UT makes it clear that they're still all in on John Currie after this, then they're making it clear that their judgment can't be trusted either.

Let's get this done.
