Current Roster Makeup

Not sure what your saying exactly. If your saying to buy in a recession to get rich. Yeah that might work if you can hold on until the recession ends. You can't keep buying on the way down and make money until it actually starts going back up.

Buy and hold does work. Recession is a perfect time to buy because of value. If you bought in '08, you'd be making a lot of money right now.

Ok. If you say so. Not going to debate stock market in a basketball forum. It was an analogy nothing else.

If he can get stronger in the post on d I agree. A little worried he would get bullied down low.

Yes, I agree. He needs to hit the weights more if he is going to play at a 5 spot. He rebounds nice when he really wants it, but also is pushed and bullied out of position too often.

Seems in every thread people are asking, well how many spots, but do we have room, what about so & so. Figured it would be helpful to have a current roster breakdown as of 5/13/2014 at 3:53pm. YOU ARE ALLOWED 13 SCHOLARSHIP PLAYERS ON YOUR ROSTER...

Current Scholarship Players:

Josh Richardson-SR 6'6" 196lbs
Ian Chiles- SR 6'1" 200lbs
Eric McKnight- SR 6'9" 210lbs
Pops Ndiaye-SR 6'10" 275lbs
Armani Moore-JR 6'5" 215lbs
Kevin Punter-JR 6'4" 170lbs
Devon Baulkman- JR 6'5" 200lbs
Derek Reese-JR 6'8" 220lbs
Robert Hubbs-SO 6'6" 206lbs
Detrick Mostella- FR 6'3" 170lbs
Jabari McGhee-FR 6'8" 225lbs
Willie Carmichael- FR 6'7" 195lbs

Remaining Targets:

Tariq Owens- FR 6'10" 205lbs
Darius Thompson- SO 6'5" 181lbs
Robert Carter (TRANSFER)- JR 6'8" 245lbs

How can you be 6'10 and weigh 205lbs? That almost seems impossible. The way I like to eat, if I was 6'10 I'd weigh 300+ and would be thumping heads like Godzilla.

Used to weigh 200 when I was 6'0. I'm 6'3 now at 150. Hate myself. Can't gain any weight. Don't understand what happened.

Yeah you'd think a big 10 minded coach would be able to help him stand his ground in the post. But to be fair that isn't his natural position and it wasn't a need. But hopefully another yr in the weight room and better preparation will help with that.

New here, 1st Post: We're in for back-to-back storybook seasons in Knoxville.

'13-'14 was rather exciting for me with all the ups and downs. Never called for Zo's head, although the bad losses were definitely nerve racking. Last season kind of reminds me of the Pacers season this year. High expectations throughout, low points hit and everybody loses their minds. But I always knew with our talent we were going to get something special done this year and we did.

'14-'15: Our style of play last season was very "Memphis Grizzli-esque", Slow you down, Play hard-nosed D, Feed the big boys on the block…All we were missing to be really great was that one true PG. This season will be also be one for the books I believe. Although we still lack a true PG, Tyndall's system makes it seems like the need for one will not be as blatant as the need for one in Martin's system was. We have scorers and leapers. That's deadly playing the fast-paced ball as advertised by Tyndall. I believe this will be a bigger coaster than last year believe it or not. If Richardson comes in Day 1 of practice being that vocal, core guy we need to mesh these guys together then I think 20 wins is possible. I wouldn't be surprised if that's not the case though and we get around 15,16.

Returning Players
Josh Richardson- really good defender, showed a lot of promise during the NCAA, improves every year, best player on the team currently
Armani Moore- undervalued player IMO
Derek Reese-role player
Robert Hubbs- superstar talent. Hope he has a breakout year

Juco signees
Kevin Punter-juco sg that should provide some scoring
Devon Baulkman- not sure how much of an impact he will have. Have to wait and see.

Graduate Transfers
Ian Chiles- Nice addition at a position of need
Eric McKnight- Much needed experience in the post

FRESHMEN
Detrick Mostella- Biggest concern is can he get qualified. I have my doubts.
Jabari McGhee- Unheralded Freshman
Willie Carmichael- Unheralded Freshman
Tariq Owens- Unheralded Freshman

Looking at this roster, I think there's a lot to like but I don't see this as a tournament team. If Tyndall takes them to the NCAAT, he's really done a nice job.

My biggest concerns are....

1. Mostella getting cleared is going to be huge. I have serious doubts he will be cleared. Even then, he's a top 50 player, not a McD's AA. His dunk contest video I think has fans a little over optimistic about his contribution this fall.

2. We don't have much talent in the post

3. If we have to rely a lot on the 3 frosh other than Mostella, we will be hurting IMO

4. Hubbs has to have a breakout season.

5. Lack of true point guard

Also, I think Owens and Mostella (if cleared) could be the first true building blocks of Tyndall's era over the next couple of years.

Our fans are getting a little over excited about this class IMO. What Tyndall has done over this short period of time, with a limited pool of candidates has been really impressive. However, that doesn't mean that this class is equally impressive.

To your points:

1. I agree. I think it's going to come down to the wire for Mostella. U.T. is his third school and he has attended 2 schools that are essentially basketball boarding schools used to get kids eligible, and he still is struggling to get cleared. Not a good sign.

2. There is no one on the current roster with a post up game. When the game slows down, there is no one that is going to require a double team in the post.

3. True

4. I don't know what to think about Hubbs. There seems to be a log jam in terms of minutes. I don'g think J-Rich will come off the court much. That leaves Hubbs, Punter, Mostella, Baulkman, and Moore all fighting for minutes as the other wing.

5. True

Will be interesting to see if the Tyndall FLIP can translate to the SEC.
He's already said they have to OVER achieve. Understatement in my opinion.

Could not agree more.

Given the timing and amount of open scholarships he did a nice job of at least filling it with D1 level players IMO.

However the class is still rated in the 40's and is middle of the pack talent level in the poor SEC.

It's impressive in the sense of how much time he had to work with, but this isn't the type of class that you hope for going forward IMO.

Going forward do you see him sticking with prep school and juco players, or is that just for this class?

If Mostella is forced to go the Juco route, think we'll pull in another Juco SG?

He's gonna still take JUCOs and prep kids, but not like he did this year or past years at USM and Morehead State.

He has great prep and JUCO connections, so he's still gonna take a few, but I would expect him to be more selective going forward.

By taking this many this year though he avoided a 12-15 win season and should at least be able to field a competitive 18-20 win team IMO.
