I wonder what paycheck to paycheck living in 1971 was like compared to today? I guess that’s what I’m really comparing

I think everyone, including me at first, is overthinking it. Which is fine, I asked for your thoughts.

Did you read the page I posted?

The "wealthy" had encyclopedias. Most "poor" have or can get a phone with internet free.

The wealthy had a black and white tv ( that's where he was off 20 or so years) but still, the poor can watch tv on their phones.

The wealthy had to write letters, buy stamps and take the letter to the mail box...and wait and wait and wait. The poor have email. On their phones.

I can sit in my van down by the river and order Carabbaas and have it delivered to my van down by the river. Could Elvis do that in 71?

Yes. And the phone stuff and email are included in the creature comforts such as AC, etc. so I still question how much anxiety and pressure there was to make ends meet in 71 vs today. But since you then described you think he might be considering upper middle class as wealthy, I went the opposite. What’s life like as a one paycheck away from being poor person like today compared to 1971? History makes thinks look prettier, but my view of 1971 would say it would be a lot easier to rebound back out of being poor in 1971 than today

I don't know. He was a refrigerator salesman at Sears and Roebuck with a wife and two kids living in a small 1 stop sign country town in middle Tennessee trying to open a real estate office. I'm sure he was looking mostly at his surroundings at that time when he wrote this.

And I don't agree with being able to rebound in 71 being easier than now. Pepper just explained about a guy making a living posting YouTube videos from home.

The government subsidies are more advanced and plentiful now and it should be way easier to make a buck.

Right around 50 years ago was when the US Supreme Ct. finally dealt the death blow to vagrancy laws. Those laws and the old poorhouses and work farms were already on the way out but there were still plenty of places that being poor and unemployed could get you sentenced to labor 50 years ago.

Interest rates were in the mid 7s.
Interstate 40 wasn't yet complete in Tennessee.
Welfare checks were sent by snail-mail.
Ma Bell ruled the roost.
You paid long distance fees for calls to areas 10 miles down the road.
Politics was a blood sport amongst politicians.
Kids were to be seen and not heard.
I was the remote control and chief antenna turner.
I was 9yo.

In 2021:
Interest rates are mid to low 3s.
Interstates completed all over, but rough as hail.
Welfare payments are electronically disseminated.
Phone service providers are numerous.
What is this "long distance fee" you speak of?
Politics is a blood sport between everyone.
It's all about the chillrin.
I control the remote. Antenna?
I'm soon to be 59yo. WTF?

I've got internet and WiFi via my phone only. My cable is via Dish Network.
I still haven't seen the Godfather.

I believe, without the benefit of any data, that these two things have had a big hand in the increase of cases of obesity and diabetes. I also understand that both have benefits, too.

GMO'd tomatoes have lost a lot of their acidity and taste. However, they're bigger, brighter, rounder, and disease resistant.

I get it, but there are many better options too, you don't have to eat that stuff. Worse is still available but overall I personally believe with the choices, information and knowledge it's no contest.
