Crompton

Crompton can't hit the broad side of a barn and stares his receivers down. Other than that he's just fine.

Nick stephens looks like a servicable qb with some coaching.

Just really didn't see enough of bj coleman to form a opinion. Although what i saw, he doesn't look ready. Raw is a good word to describe him.

Chumpton is flat out awful and should be a TE or special teams player next year, he mentally can not play QB at the D1 level, sorry

I commend you guys on your optimism. That comes along with having a change in coaches. But if you have watched enough football in your life that you have any clue about what is going on then you KNOW Crompton will not be even a serviceable QB in the SEC. Sorry, but its the truth we have to live with.

That's it in a nut shell. This guy is NOT, and never will be a D1 QB. I'm not sure any of the 3 we have there now win many games. If I had to pick I'd go Coleman. Stephens showed signs of toughness and running ability but needs lots of polish.

i think Crompton will be just fine next year.

Not trying to be a smart arse but what do you base this opinion on?

He has shown little if any ability to read defenses and does not go through his progressions well at all.

Crompton had all world potential coming out of HS. What happened to him in College may not have been the best. But changing OC's of the years, staying behind Ainge - doesn't account for bouncing screen and dump passes like he did. Not to mention the fumble at Auburn...

will someone mark my words and hold me to this...Jonathon Crompton will have a senior season quite like Ainge's senior year...Mark my words he will be a good SEC quarterback....hold me to it

cromptons completely hopeless. if he doesnt short hop his receivers he'll throw it 20 yards over their heads. with good coaching i believe that bjs got potential. he made a terrible decision in the vandy game... but with a little more gametime experience and his leadership ability i think we'll be alright next year with him starting. im positive CLK sees it too.

I hope you are correct. I seriously am at the point I just want CLK, Reaves, and the rest of the offensive staff to pick a QB and run with it.

No matter who it is will be better than last year after their first practice with CLK and staff.

I have faith in all three qb's and also in the coaching staff to develop them into great readers of the defense.

I'm 27 years old, been a Vol fan my entire life. Given I don't remember the 80's that well, but I can honestly say that Jonathon Crompton was the worst looking quarterback I've ever seen under center. It's not just that he made bad choices, slow reads, and costly mistakes. The guy never looked like he belonged on the field. Everything from the way he moves to the way he stands in the pocket, nothing about him said SEC quarterback. Even in Ainge's God awful season he still at least looked like a quarterback. Crompton just looked lost from the word go.

I remember in the Vandy game when Coleman came in, I was watching the game with my dad. Before he even threw a pass I turned to my dad and said "Well, at least he looks like a quarterback, like he belongs back there and has a clue." Crompton just never had it.

Welcome to the board...

Crompton does 2 things well...

1) He moves well outside the pocket and throws better on the run than being stationary.

2) He throws a good deep ball.

Like you said though, he looks lost. I think some of that could be learning Clawson's offense that was supposedly real difficult.

I had no idea USC offered to Crompton. I've heard some people say that Crompton was over rated due to the caliber of competition that he played against in high school. Did he play for a small school in NC?

I think his school is a 3 or 4A division...so it's not small but it's no 6A Texas/Florida school. But if USC comes calling then you have to have a little talent.

Could this be part of the reason why CLK seems to be fine with the possibility of not gettin a big time QB this year? Maybe Crompton can be a much improved QB with some good coaching and in a system that might be better suited for him. Hell, I don't know.

I'm in no way defending Crompton. He did not perform well at all. But looking at everything in the whole, no one else did either. He spent alot of time running for his life, or looking up from the bottom of the pile. Sure a great QB, could have still helped out by being able to rise above. A little contribution from everyone tends to keep spreading around. But, it can't be easy QB'ing in the SEC knowing ahead of time on any given snap, you're on your own. That bred alot of his bad decisions. He spent alot of his time looking like Wade Phillips did against the Eagles.

Coaching. All about coaching. Remember Ainge without/with Cut??? Maybe we had no one to teach him how to read D's. Yeah, he had a year or two under Cut as a backup, but what about when it counted as a starter. None of our QB's did much this year. Maybe some showed marginal promise over each other, but when all 3 were meager at best, it goes back to coaching and teaching.

I am not convinced that JC is as bad of a QB as he showed this year. He showed signs of being ok. When he would drop back, look off receiver(s)...then run. He looked like he has the ability to make plays.

I hope CLK could possibly work with him and make him better

no

Ainge was starting before Cut ever got back to UT

Starting before Cut came back...yes. Performing like he did under Cut...no. Was Crompton bad this year...yes. Could he be a SEC/UT QB under the right teacher...possibly. We'll find out soon enough if he is a total bust or a byproduct of insufficient coaching.
