5. Crompton taking coaching: It's been tough sledding so far for Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton, who's turned the ball over and struggled to finish drives. The Vols' coaches haven't lost faith in him, but they would like to see him respond better to what they're preaching every day on the practice field. There's a sense among some on the Tennessee staff that Crompton needs to be more realistic about the way he's playing right now. He has the talent and the tools. He just has to go do it. If there's not some improvement against Auburn, the Vols will then look seriously at trying to get Nick Stephens some time in the Northern Illinois game.

At least the some of coaching staff sees what we see even if Crompton doesn't. A good sign IMO.

Some guys pan out and others do not, it's that simple. I'd have to say to this point, Crompton looks like a bust.

This is one of the reasons I am less hopeful than others regarding a turnaround for the season. To me this situation is colored with the dark shade of memories from 2005.

Before this one is over 2005 may look like a good year:crazy:

This board is an amazing place, it's an echo chamber on steroids. First you take reports of mediocre spring and fall camps and turn them into 10-2/11-1 seasons, then at the first sign of adversity you act like we will never win again.

We will end up 7-5/8-4. Not great or even good but not the end of the world either. We aren't going to be playing in the SECCG but we can still ruin a few teams' seasons.

Fulmer really isn't an idiot. Have a little patience.

Yes it is a typical sounding board for many Vol fans with many opinions. I appreciate the message. I think that the loss to UCLA has led to the dramatic mood swing. Given the results since then I can understand the volume of the echo.

Could the fanbase use a little more faith...possibly. Does the UCLA loss and the 24 point loss to Florida offer reason to lose some hope....definitely.

If that is true lets hope for 7-5 cause 8-4 will mean a raise and contract extension for Fulmer

This AUburn game is my last hope for UT. I have them picked to win due to defense. If the offense can just do something, anything positive. I guess we will see.

You know, it's easy to shoot at Jon. He certainly is part of the problem. But only part....

There are 118 major Division I NCAA football teams. The University of Tennessee is 113th in penalties per game, and 107th in penalty yards per contest.
UT has been penalized 26 times for 215 yards through this season’s first three games.
That’s nearly nine penalties for nearly 72 yards per game.

This entire team is out of sync. That's why we are where we are.

Practice Report: Coach Phillip Fulmer said he was pleased with practice.

"Practice was very good," Fulmer said. "I was very happy about what we did yesterday and I thought we built on that today."

:glare: Has Fulmer closed practice?

 and for me, the big thing was another blow out loss to Florida validated just how far away we really are, regardless of what happens the rest of the season....because FL is not going to lose 3 SEC games this year and while GA may lose two, it's doubtful that one of them will be to us.....so the miracle of 07 is not something one should count on.

which is more reason to not have hope right now.

now we've got recruits opening up recruitment once again.....despite the reasons given, the timing has to beg the question......

i don't think we're in a free fall, spiraling out of control situation.......yet......but it sure feels like we could be pretty soon.

very hard to have that 'circle the wagons' attitude for me right now.

In high school Crompton was simply a big fish in a small pond, and now that hes been thrown into the ocean he doesn't know how to swim. Hes always had a firey attitude, which was a good thing in high school. But so far in college that cockiness has done nothing but make him look stupid. He has to be realistic with himself first and foremost before he can make any improvements. Hes not going to be the best player on the field like he always was in high school.

I almost came unglued from my seat when I saw him get up in that Florida players face after he got the snot knocked out of him. There was absolutely no place for that considering the score, and how bad he had already looked that day. Not to mention he wasn't even jawing with the right guy that hit him. That enthusiasim is great sometimes, but I never want to see my quarterback doing that in those circumstances. He still plays like hes 10 years old. It makes sense to me now why he and Ainge never got along that well, its hard to like a guy with that inflated of an ego. He needs to get smacked around some to be brought into reality.

I know. I can at least appreciate the guys like Rick Clausen who knew their place on the team, and didn't act like they were gods gift to Tennessee football. Hell even Tee Martin who was very physically talented, perhaps even more so than Crompton; didn't act that cocky. Crompton just doesn't have it mentally. I can see it...he stares down recievers, he doesn't recognize defenses, reads them too slow and goes through progressions too slow, is a horrible clock manager and game manager overall, and is a horrible field general. And the sad part is he has a lot of good leadership qualities, but it looks like to me that the team almost just doesn't respect him as their leader because he is so out of touch with reality. I think guys like Josh Briscoe and even Eric Berry are more looked up to than JC. I think Crompton could learn a thing or two from them. Lead by example, not your mouth.

i agree he needs to shut his mouth. i'd like to see some of the guys get in his grill and shut it for him.

I am also disappointed in Crompton. Not just because of his less than impressive showings, but his attitude period. Even in the UCLA game, as bad as he looked, he was out there head held high, even smiling at times. He just don't get it. I don't know if he is just so cocky he can't see the big picture or if he just don't understand that the purpose of him being on the field is to play smart, manage the offense, and be effective. It is almost like he thinks he needs to be out there just because he has waited his turn, regardless of how he performs. Then he comes out and makes stupid comments like we should have won. I just don't get him. I am guilty of saying how I expected Crompton to do very well. I even said I thought he would have better numbers this year than Stafford at Georgia. Well, it appears I was badly wrong. We are having to dumb down our offense just so this guy can stay on the field. Our offense looks no different than last year. I really believe Fulmer has his hand in this and is keeping Crompton out there. I think Clawson is a victim of circumstance. If Crompton is not getting it done, go ahead and hurt his feelings and get him out of there. Put Stephens in. Yeah, they call him "Pick Nick", but would it really be any different? Crompton has thrown 4 INT already!

i thought he had more than 4 ints.

i agree w/ you Clawson isn't able to run his stuff cause Phil won't let him

He may have. I know it is at least 4. I am with you on the Clawson deal. There is no way he is the only one calling this offense. It looks just like last years. I feel sorry for the guy if this is the case. If he gets booted out the door without even being able to show what he has, that sucks for him. His career could be ruined.

Might as well give someone else a try if Crompton doesn't look any better this week against Auburn. Crompton is almost like the short 12 year old white kid that honestly believes he will play in the NBA someday. Its pretty much pathetic. I don't know whether to not like him, or just feel sorry for him and how immature and or stupid he still is. I think Phil's almost too afraid to tell Crompton he sucks and hes going with another QB, because he doesn't want to hurt his child like feelings. It might shatter his confidence for life lol.

I agree. I don't think he wants to hurt his feelings either, but that is his job. The University don't pay him 2.5 million a year or whatever he makes to be nice guy. He needs to put the best people in there to win ballgames.
