Crompton still starter/Looks Like We're Stuck With Crompton (merged)

Lane isn't going to throw Stephens to the wolves in the swamp. If we do get demolished (not saying we will) then he will let Crompton take the beating and Stephens will be the starter for the rest of the season.

Does he really have a choice? Wouldn't Stephens be playing if he was better? It was a open competition in fall camp, Crompton won it. He's the best we got, its going to be a long year.

AMEN!! No one seems to be able to accept this though. Stephens REALLY lit it up while on the field last year didn't he?!?!? These "fans" should be careful what they wish for...

All truth and jest aside, I hope that Crompton produces this weekend! If not...it's gonna be a painful return home!

There is a very good chance he is not our best qb but the qb with the least eligibility. By playing him CLK is telling the world "come play with us you will start, Stephens will always ride the pine." This is more about the future than this year.

He'll start Florida, but if he is as bad as he was last game, it's time to start Stephens for Ohio so he can get a game under his belt before the SEC schedule. I have always thought that he looked more poised and was more accurate last year, even if his results were not a ton better.

Are you kidding? I'm shocked that they didn't throw Hargrave in there too.

Lex, you think Gainesville will be Crompton's swan song?

I'm interested honestly to see how it plays out. Whether it's after the Florida game or not... The moment Crompton is yanked his career is over. There will be no going back, IMO.

That may be why CLK is so reluctant to switch. If he switches to Stephens now and he stinks then do you put Crompton back in. That would be horrific. And what if Stephens gets hurt? Then he has to put Crompton back in. CLK wants to make sure he gives Crompton every chance to succeed before pulling the plug since he only has one other viable option. CPF had to play this game last year and it didn't end well.

I agree. I think he is going to give Crompton every opportunity to keep his job this year. I think even an average performance this Saturday would certainly make him the starter for Ohio. Riding it out with Crompton will certainly help in recruiting.

In regards to Stephens, I doubt he could keep the job if he could not beat out Crompton. I am fairly confident Kiffin will use Stephens as a last resort.

The unknown is always a factor. I have long said that CLK and staff needed Crompton to be able to play to help with recruiting a QB.

But as far as making the move... As I said in another thread. Throwing Stephens in the mix at Gainesville would most likely be devastating. If he struggles... Then we're in the same boat as last year with 2 QB's who are not mentally very stable...

I do not envy CLK and the staff's decision. It looks like a no-brainer from the outside... There's more than just one angle to lok at.

I want Crompton gone as much as anybody...but from some insiders Stephens is not the answer...According to some Stephens is not a leader and his accuracy and decision making is not any better then Cromptons...Unfortunatly I think we are playing the best we got.....

I don't think CLK is the type to go waffling back and forth, so once he makes a decision to change it will be over for Crompton. I also don't think he will throw him out after one bad game (this year under his tenure). The time is getting closer though that Crompton will be an unpleasant memory on the way to something really good.

Thank the good lord! Kiffin has to know we can not win with him, I thought he would play the best players! He is undermining the team! Just put anyone else in hell a defensive lineman, anyone!!!

I don't think that Lane was all coachspeak when he talked about his play calling. Even in WKU game he settled Jon down with very quick throws/wr screens. Kiffin would undoubtedly change his playcalling dramatically if he could call the UCLA game over again.

Kiffin is cocky. After watching Jon practice for a few months he probably thought "I can turn this guy into an average SEC QB."

The rest of us have been there and done that. Some believe that he would have better luck walking on water or raising General Neyland from the dead. I think he felt compelled to try.

Lane will give him a manageable game plan in the swamp. If he fails miserably, I wouldn't expect a do over.
