Trump says he’s sending National Guard to Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (
WREG) — President Donald Trump announced that the National Guard is coming to Memphis during an interview with Fox and Friends on Friday morning.
“We’re going to Memphis, I’m just announcing that now, and we’ll straighten that out,” Trump said on Fox. “National Guard, and anybody else we need. And by the way, we’ll bring in the military, too, if we need it.”
In the Fox interview, Trump said an executive on the FedEx board of directors told him Memphis would be a good place to send the National Guard, telling the president he had to ride in an armored vehicle rather than walk one block to his hotel.
Memphis is “deeply troubled,” Trump said. “We’re going to fix that just like we did Washington.”
President Trump says he is sending them to address crime concerns with the support of the mayor and the governor.
This comes after Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris spoke with WREG, confirming that consideration has been given to the National Guard coming to town on Thursday.
He said while the governor also has the right to ask for Guard troops, he is asking Gov. Bill Lee to “please reconsider, if this is on the table.”
“To have individuals with military fatigues, semi-automatic weapons, and armored vehicles patrolling our streets is way too far, anti-democratic, and anti-American,” Mayor Harris said.
