"I'm going to be going out tonight, I think with the police and with the military of course," the president said. "So we're going to do a job — the National Guard is great, they've done a fantastic job."

This is in Charlotte about 20 mins from my house. The light rail system is used by about 10% of the people it was projected to transport, far far less than are needed to actually pay for its operation. Much less the millions and millions it cost to build it at taxpayer expense. 20 somethings who happen to live off of South Blvd (street it runs parallel to) use it on weekends to get downtown and bar hop. Mostly its used by Latinos who live in the Latino district to get to their jobs at hotels and buildings downtown. The project was built 100% because of "little brother syndrome" that Charlotte leaders have towards ATL and trying to be like their "big brother". The vast majority of people who live here never, ever use it. It isnt like MARTA or the subway in NYC. Its only 1 track and runs north/south on that 1 route. Really dumb.

It passes through some pretty rough areas that are dangerous on the way downtown. Very sad that lady died. She isnt the first sadly. There are ghetto portions of town in Charlotte on all 4 sides of town where you would never, ever want to be after dark unarmed. North, south, east, and west. Charlotte is a little over 2x the size of Knoxville with slightly more than 1 million people just in the city limits. Having lived here for 30+ years the key is to live outside city limits (and the city bus lines) where crime falls drastically, or be rich and live in gated communities or on a golf course etc. We live outside the city in a neighboring town and life is closer to Knoxville style. Charlotte proper has big city problems like ATL despite being much smaller. Traffic and crime are both pretty bad.
