Crime and the United States

I remember a time, seemingly not so long ago, where MAGA Republicans resisted federal government control over localities. Between this and deploying the National Guard into various cities that the Trump base hates, and to go after people the base has seething resentment for, seems like that principle is malleable.

DC is not a state and was never meant to be controlled by anyone other than the federal government.

The guy who pardoned J6er's that assaulted cops in Washington DC now wants to clean up Washington DC. Principle is not only malleable, it's non-existent with Trump.

Policing it on the streets is fed overreach.

For almost 200 years the DC metropolitan police dept was under federal control. It wasn't until 1975 that the DC police were placed under local administration. Again, Washington DC was never meant to be anything other than the seat of the federal government and was absolutely never meant to be an independent city-state under local control.

So what changed in the last 50 years to make fed policing a good idea? Lots of black and brown people there and Trump's base goes into orgasmic frenzy every time he even symbolically whallops them.

What's changed? Local rule by incompetent and corrupt locals is what has changed.

But in any case you are intentionally confusing the argument over the separation of powers between states and the feral government by trying to include a 10 sq mile city that per the constitution was never intended to have local control.

IMO, I don't think Trump (any president) has the power to re-federalize the governance of DC. I haven't read the DC Home Rule Act so the power might be in there but it seems like it would take congressional action in order for the feds to retake control.

Impeach. Impeach.

It has for 50 years. But Trump needs a straw man to go after. Preferably one that appeases the MAGA base.

I'm sure that there is some of that involved.

I'm not saying he legally cannot do it. He can. I'm just saying that it is politically-motivated, and is not based on some new, sudden, emergent need to reverse course at this point.

EBT requires a special reader to work? I figured it was just another magnetic strip like any CC. I had no clue it was physically impossible for it to work.

Did Marion Berry reduce DC crime rates or just add to it?
