Here's a thought (overly simplified I know):

With our current OC we are a pass first offense. HH is likely told to concentrate on pass blocking. Pass blocking is basically a passive action (take a quick step back and then react to what the defense does). Run blocking is an agressive action (fire out and knock somone on their butts). The first waits and reacts to the action. The second dictates the action. Our guys are being taught to wait and react and can't pull the trigger for the run game.

To the bolded: I'm going to go out on a limb and say that I don't think Dooley has some sort of mythical plan that is beyond human comprehension for turning the program around. Keeping coaches who clearly aren't getting it done is not the way to improve. I think he's keeping them because he's afraid of the defensive staff leaving, and he doesn't want to replace the whole staff in one offseason.

How can you be so sure Hiestand is the one at fault here, though? Yes, the running game underperformed. Is it 100% the O-Line's fault? The running backs didn't help at all by dancing in the backfield. The wide receivers didn't help at all with some half-assed blocking at times.

Sure, Poole was a 1000 yard rusher last year. But we had to rely on the run last year with Simms at QB. It was run the ball or have no chance of winning, much like the Alabama and LSU games this year when he was in. Except Simms couldn't throw the ball in the ocean, so they easily stacked the box on us. With Worley, he couldn't make the checks that Simms could at the line, and our running game suffered once again.

The O-Line was also greatly improved in the pass-blocking department, giving Bray or whoever was back there plenty of time to throw the ball all year. And don't forget that we had 1 true freshman, 4 true sophomores, and a junior all start/see significant time. Some of those guys would still be JV or second string if we had gotten the O-Line recruiting we needed in the past.

My real point is, it's still too early to hang this all on Hiestand. There are just way too many factors that go into the equation. Is it youth/inexperience? Is is inept coaching? Strong cases can be made for either side, and Dooley's decision to keep Chaney/Hiestand makes me believe it's the former. However, Dooley could be a poor coach. Who knows. We'll find out next season.

Lawvol wants us to trust what he says over Jim Haslam and Chad Clifton...

The dream world he lives in must be an interesting place. I will be sure to ignore Bebe and ask him directly about Israeli security questions.

Hiestand is still regarded as one of the better O line coaches in the country...of course I can hear some out there screaming at me.."idiot"....but guess what??? He didnt all of a sudden forget how to coach...or maybe Dooley is some sort of a masochistic physolate and wants to inflict as much pain as possible to himself and his team...:cray:

People who think a sophomore offensive line (true sophomores who did not redshirt) should be dominating college football at 19 really need to learn more about football.

I'll be honest. I don't know much about football but after watching a bunch of RB's in the NFL, I really feel it has to do with the actual RB's and not just the O-line.

Our first question should have been: Who the hell was coaching our RB's? Oh wait...it was Dooley? hahahaha!??

Great RB's can make bad O-lines look better than they are. Bad RB's can make decent O-lines look worse than they are. I think we experienced the second one this year. For some reason Poole didn't run with the same determination as he did last season. Trent Richardson would have made this O-line look pretty good.

I would venture to say that a lot of us put so much stock in what Chad says because he is a professional, and as such, has a better eye for the game than we do.

Thats CORRECT. Some people just want these KIDS to come in and be WORLD BEATERS. IT TAKES TIME!!! One other thing, you are also correct about what the HC and OC wants to do offensively. HH will be told what to teach, what set they are going to run on offense. If we were a run based Offense, I tend to think that HH would be best suited for that style of Offense. HH is Old School, line up and SMASH type coach. He has done wonders for the passing game. I really think they will be better this coming year, having 2 full seasons under them and will be in better shape and stronger. Now will that equate to more wins, dont know.

LAWVOL, I would tell you and everyone else if HH needed to be let go. As experienced as he is in TEACHING Lineman, one would think that the running game would at least look decent. At times it did, but when a kid is in Highschool, they are either in a Running Offense or a pass happy spread. Hardly ever do you see a Well rounded Lineman come into college. They have to LEARN!!! It takes some guys longer than others to grow into themselves. Some guys just flare out in college.

Harry has put alot of kids in the league. Hes taught some good lineman in the league as well.

What all you idiots don't understand is we don't have a running back. Hell Poole was not starting with two different coaching staffs. He wasn't any good. He was just all we had. Lane is coming off of an ACL injury and adding that he is a freshman in the SEC. I mean good lord what do you want. Almost every person on here would fire the entire staff and start from scratch. Thats why none of you coach on saturdays or have any say in who coaches in saturday. Coach Dooley has just now built the ground floor of a program and now we are starting to build off of that. The man has been here 23 months. I think he's doing a fine job and I am willing to bet if he given the chance he deserves I will be telling every last one of you I told you so. I guarantee you one thing if the man keeps bringing in the talent we will win bottom line. We will be better next year wait and see. THE VOLS WILL BE THE THOSE VOLS WE ALL LOVE AND REMEMBER. COME ON GUYS LETS GET READY FOR THE FUTURE. ITS GONNA BE GOOD.

Not if your tendencies are to throw the ball more, stretch the field. They tried to use the pass to try and open up the run this year, in the first couple of games. And we ran the ball decent to start the year, but we threw the HELL OUT OF THE BALL. Then, QB is hurt, Star WR is hurt, then the lack of creativity in calling plays and calling plays at the wrong times, created a lack luster running game.

It all comes down to play calling and knowing when to call certain plays. Just like the damn end arounds and jet sweeps. THROW THOSE OUT OF THE PLAY BOOK. Those work in HS or mid majors but not the SEC. Defense has WAY TOO MUCH SPEED.

The Oline wasnt ready to run the ball like they tried to mid way through the season. I bet in spring ball they hit the SLED, ALOT. Gotta get to the point of attack and beat your man. Thats all it is fellas. HH can teach Technique all day long, but if the Tackle or Guard doesnt implement what hes been taught or just gets man handled, then people want to say its the coach. And yes, he is one of the best Oline coaches in the game.
Hes taught along time and produced some GREAT olines. And when he was in Chicago, he had to deal with a change in scheme and injuries destroyed the bears.
