Could Tennessee have the fastest offense in the SEC?

People throw around 4.4 times and sub 4.4 times like they are fairly common. In fact, they are extremely rare, and I would bet that there are not more than 1 or 2 at most on any team that can do it legit.

Bingo....I have a family member who was a big time coordinator in the SEC who is now retired and I ask him about a recruit they had offered who reportedly ran a sub 4.4....he said its EXTREMELY rare to find a football player who runs a sub 4.4 period...many are listed..but few can actually do it...BUT...offense is more about mismatches and schemes anyway...

There seems to be a difference in straightaway sprinting speed and football speed. In the past we've had sprinters from the track team playing receiver, and I can't remember them being as good as their speed would have suggested.

Speed is speed. It's no more an indicator of someone necessarily being a great football player. Same with strength. There've been slews of lineman that can move crazy amounts of weight but aren't really all that good becaus there's a lot more to it than that.

Being elite in any given attribute (speed/strength/vertical leap/etc) is an asset, nothing more, in complex games. Obviously it's the whole point in sprinting or powerlifting but in multi-faceted sports like football there's LOTS more to be considered that will make you a good "football player". This is why some guys, with a high degree of "intangibles", can still excel while seeming to be wanting in some of those "measurables".

That's a nice way to say it. Thanks!

I get the feeling that if we did not have such great speed, we would have poster on here bashing UT and claiming that we will never be able to compete in the SEC until we have elite speed. How about we just agree that as long as these guys are great receivers, we would rather them be faster than slower.

Ha! The point, Skippy, is that as fast as our skill position players are, they guys covering them in league play are just as fast. Next time, have your tutor sit next to you when you're on VN.

I posted this question on another board, but wanted to get folks thoughts on here as well.

We have:

Patterson, Hunter, Neal, and Rogers who have all ran sub 4.4 times in the 40 yard dash.

Watson, Dallas, and Howard are big time burners as well.

Lane and Young also seem to have that "breakaway" speed as well.....Thoughts?

According to the roster, Vincent Dallas has been moved to DB...

by far minus the QB

we're gonna have a pro style attack that is faster than most pro teams

this tn offense definitely could be the fastest group in the sec. in fact i think they are although i don't follow other teams recruiting closely, i doubt any team has the top level recieving talent we have. our rb's are a little above average id say also because rajon neal has world class speed. and as far as darick goes, he may not be 4.4 but i think he's in the 4.5 range and at 220 that aint bad. 40 times get thrown around alot, but both hunter and patterson have world class sub 4.4 speed. it gonna be exciting

I'm afraid the description "world class" is waaaaay overused. We don't have anyone that is even remotely "world class" fast. Haven't since Leonard Scott. If you can't run a 10.2 100m you aren't even in the conversation at that level.

Neal is fast but were you aware this last UT track season Neal's best 60m time was bested by Devrin Young? Having said that neither are serious D1 speed guys by track standards though they are pretty fleet by football standards.

C Patterson & Q Watson are both legit 10.5 100m guys and that really is pretty damn fast.

Hunter and Tino 4.42
