Ron Kind Won't Seek Reelection in 2022, Harming Democrats' Chances of Holding the House
Ron Kind, a longtime Democratic representative for Wisconsin, announced Tuesday that he will not run for reelection in 2022.
The 58-year-old Wisconsin congressman has represented the state’s sprawling rural and suburban district on the southwestern corner of the state for nearly a quarter-century, first taking office in 1997. He is a senior member of the Ways and Means Committee.
But Kind faced a tough reelection race in 2020, winning reelection by just 2.6%. House Republicans need to win about five seats to claim the majority, and the district Kind is vacating figures to be a top target — even if it's redrawn somewhat in the redistricting process.
Kind is one of the few Democratic members of Congress to represent a House district where most voters
chose former President
Donald Trump in 2020, with 51.5% voting for Trump and 46.8% for now-President Joe Biden, according to
Daily Kos Elections.
That made him a top target for Republicans. Derrick Van Orden, Kind's Republican 2020 opponent, has already announced a 2022 bid. The National Republican Congressional Committee has already run targeted ads against Kind in this cycle.
