After watching this Ohio game, well, I've essentially disconnected from this season. I will be glad to see us win, and disappointed to see us lose, but I can't afford to invest my emotional well being in this team in my last semester of college here at UT.
That being said, I have always considered the Debord hire a sort of very short term patch up to this ship rather than a natural hiring progression, and as soon as we reach proverbial land we would drop him and pursue a big time OC within a year or two of his initial hire. I have to think that Butch will be making that move at the end of the year, in our transition time from QB and possibly running back. (Mahoney absolutely must go, Jones and Hall prolonged his stay imo with their good play LY).
No matter what happens, I do believe Butch deserves another year, if for nothing more than bringing us a modicum of respectability. I never considered this year his make or break, but next year all bets are off. If he can keep us at the least 8-4 this year as well as next year, I say we stick with him. 2018 has looked more enticing to me than this year ever did, and if not for the insane hype we generated this offseason, our ceiling was likely 10-2. If we make reasonable improvements on the OL between now and 2018, we could have our best offense in over a decade.
Don't let short memories cloud judgement. We are not entitled to perennial championship contending seasons. My faith has wavered some, but Butch still holds it. Go Vols.
