Looking back, the 6-foot-5, 301-pound Richmond said he knows how far he has come since last season. He said he has refined his technique, particularly in the running game, where he has worked to improve his physicality in recent months.

“Sometimes my thing was trying to be too aggressive but not using technique,” Richmond said. “That doesn’t get you anywhere, so it’s just using my technique — like I said, just understanding what I was doing. And now I understand and just continue to grow.”

...Sophomore offensive tackle Chance Hall...said Richmond learned plenty from his extensive work with the Vols’ first-team offense throughout spring practice. “I think he’s come along a lot, just with knowing exactly what we have to do as an offensive line, knowing our positions and stuff like that,” Hall said. “He’s gained a lot, and that came with reps. In spring, he was constantly getting reps, so he’s gotten much better. There’s just so much competition going on right now. It’s just making everybody better on the offensive line.”

More confident Tennessee Vols OT Drew Richmond now 'a lot better'

According to coaches and teammates, a year of watching and waiting has done wonders for Richmond’s development. He understands Tennessee’s language now. His footwork is better, his body has transformed and his confidence his back.

“Physically there are some things he’s improved upon, but mentally he’s playing a lot faster,” Mahoney said. “You hear the saying that the game is slowing down a little bit for him. He’s recognizing things. He’s talking our language a lot more.”

I hope you are right Chatta. He seems on schedule, if a bit young. Would have liked for him to have gotten some reps last year for my own fears.

If he's not, then it is going to have a lasting impact on Team 120. It's not like Kendrick steps in just in case and locks it down IMO.

I agree with this 100% If Dobbs blindside is locked down he will be allowed to settle in the pocket and get a rhythm going with his WRs. If that happens and we get a good passing game to go with our great running game then this offense will be unstoppable.

We are so dang close to truly being an championship level squad. If Richmond is as good as good as advertised we will not only be in Atlanta but Tampa to.

What everyone has not mentioned?

The fact that a relative unknown who missed his senior season of HS with a torn achilles tendon is talking about the improvement of another member of the same recruiting class. That player he is complimenting at one time or another was listed as a 5 star and one of the more highly touted players. Not something you usually see, is it?

I agree, it's odd. We've really struggled finding the idea player who can lock down that LT spot since Tiny. From a former walk-on with a torn ACL, to the top JUCO OL in the country who had offers from most of the top programs in the country who couldn't get on the field, to a guard who really didn't have LT ability doing his best and being serviceable, to now a 5 star who required a redshirt physically and mentally who's now battling a former 2-3 star OL who's struggled himself to find a starting spot on a very averaged unit. And as you said, he's being commented on as "improving and getting better" by a former 3 star who missed his senior HS season due to a torn Achilles, who appears to pretty much have the RT locked down. The whole thing has been weird IMO.

I am so interested in how this OLine plays together this year. With 4 of these guys returning, it's so critical to get that LT spot locked down. The level of play at this position can't be over emphasized snd is critical to our success. I feel confident it will be a solid group and feel even better that we have a little depth there now. When a guy gets tired or a little banged up, we now bring in someone with game experience!
