Looking back, the 6-foot-5, 301-pound Richmond said he knows how far he has come since last season. He said he has refined his technique, particularly in the running game, where he has worked to improve his physicality in recent months.
Sometimes my thing was trying to be too aggressive but not using technique, Richmond said. That doesnt get you anywhere, so its just using my technique like I said, just understanding what I was doing. And now I understand and just continue to grow.
...Sophomore offensive tackle Chance Hall...said Richmond learned plenty from his extensive work with the Vols first-team offense throughout spring practice. I think hes come along a lot, just with knowing exactly what we have to do as an offensive line, knowing our positions and stuff like that, Hall said. Hes gained a lot, and that came with reps. In spring, he was constantly getting reps, so hes gotten much better. Theres just so much competition going on right now. Its just making everybody better on the offensive line.
More confident Tennessee Vols OT Drew Richmond now 'a lot better'
According to coaches and teammates, a year of watching and waiting has done wonders for Richmonds development. He understands Tennessees language now. His footwork is better, his body has transformed and his confidence his back.
Physically there are some things hes improved upon, but mentally hes playing a lot faster, Mahoney said. You hear the saying that the game is slowing down a little bit for him. Hes recognizing things. Hes talking our language a lot more.
