Colton Jumper getting the start via new depth chart

No. Its on the coaches.

They should have recruited better players. Or they should have known earlier that the guys behind Kirkland can't play and moved someone like McDowell or Sapp to the Mike linebacker position.

At the end of the day, personnel issues will always be on the coaches.

Do you never tire of speaking from ignorance?

I'm often critical of the coaches and Jones. But you have absolutely no way of knowing for a fact that any of what you just posted is true except that "at the end of the day" the coaches are responsible for what happens.

PS- Jones is cautious to a fault when it comes to giving guys a chance on game day. There IS such a thing as relying too heavily on practice performance. Without being pressed into duty last year, it is possible if not likely that J Jones and Hall would have been buried going into August.

At some point, he needs to stick some of those more talented guys into live game action with the 1st D and see if they can perform.

I know he hates it.... but some guys are "gamers" who turn it up several notches when going up against someone who isn't on their own team.

Ok, I'm not a coach, so I won't pretend to know more than Shoop and co.. So I am going to pray that CJ doesn't miss a tackle, over run a play, take the wrong gap, did I mention miss a tackle, or get a key defensive holding penalty not once, not twice, but three times extending drives costing us two games. That is all.

I just watched the defensive plays posted by Freak (thanks by the way) and focused on Jumper on every play he was in. Any of you that have ever played football know this type of player. Smart, athletic, good size BUT AFRAID OF CONTACT. In my experience these players usually, not always, came from upper class families that lived a pampered lifestyle. They have the tools and the coaches very much want them to succeed but they don't have the dog in them. Go back if you haven't and watch how many times he just wonders around the play when everyone else is flying to the ball. I understand why they try to limit contact in practice but this could also be why he performs better in that setting. It's much easier to be in the right place at the right time if you know that encounter will result in a thud from a green contact jersey. Very different when you know the opposing player has bad intentions for you. I don't know him personally and no I don't attend practice so I can't say for certain this is the case and while I may not even be able to prove he was afraid of contact in the VT game, the film certainly proves he was not seeking it out. There are certain positions that in my opinion reward dog over measurables. I want someone in the middle that enjoys making people dread coming that way.

Shooter I like your style and what you're promoting with one exception. The sweeping generalization of kids living a certain lifestyle not having the dog in them. Were you in high school and had played against Brentwood Academy, MBA, Ensworth, BGA, Chatt McCallie, MUS, Goodpasture, and a few other private schools that have won TN state championships through the years you possibly would change your mind. I recall waaaaay back in the day one of the toughest kids I ever played against in football went to MBA and his father was an MD. He would knock you and your whole family's ding dongs through a brick wall for fun. I'm thinking you have the dog or you don't the day you pop out and the cord is cut, but you better have a LOT OF DOG if you play LB in the SEC fo' sho'!!!

Remy we agree. That's why I said most but not all. Maybe I should have been clearer though after reading my post again. I did not mean most of the rich kids had no dog, it was meant to read that most of the kids that had no dog were spoiled. I also know exactly what you mean as I did graduate from a 1A public school in Tennessee back in 02 before the multiplier for private schools. We went four seasons in a row undefeated in the regular season but never made state due to the private schools. My junior year we hosted and beat Jeff Fishers sons team. He was actually in attendance in the big city of Collinwood. Man I miss those days lol. I blame the no multiplier for at least two rings though.

I'm sure Ohio will go right at Jumper. Maybe Ohio exposing him will give a warning to the coaches of what is yet to come.

Hilarious that you call out the guy that has forgotten more Tennessee football than you'll ever know. Not surprising, fairly typical.

I'm not at practice so I can't say who needs to play.

Hate to pull the reverse Allen Iverson on you but...

We talkin bout a game. Not practice! 😁

But seriously, the proof is there and us VN'ers have reason for concern

"I say this all the time: No individual is bigger than the team. If it was, you wouldn't have much of a team," defensive coordinator Bob Shoop said. "Our job is to prepare the players who are ready to go this week, and right now, because of the injury, Colton's our No. 1 linebacker. He prepares as hard as anybody. He's done that through the course of spring. He's done that through the course of the summer. This wasn't handed to him by any means. He's earned this opportunity, and he's going to play very well."

...He made six tackles in three starts last season, but his performances in games sometimes haven't matched what he's accomplished in practice to earn the trust of two different coordinators. More often than not Jumper is in the right position to make plays, and though his physical limitations may hinder his production, his ability to handle all the roles of a middle linebacker in terms of getting the defense lined up properly sets him apart in the eyes of the coaching staff.

"That's the thing about Kirkland, that he has a great command presence out there on the football field," defensive line coach Steve Stripling said. "And Jumper will have it this week. It is critical because he is setting the front, setting the blitz paths and all those type of things. There's got to be a great command presence, and there's got to be a great continuity."

Shoop seemed to shoot down the notion of moving Jalen Reeves-Maybin from his Will (weak-side) linebacker spot to the Mike (middle) spot and inserting Cortez McDowell or even Quart'e Sapp into the lineup.

Colton Jumper to start at middle linebacker for Vols | Times Free Press

I tend to believe that someone with UT emblazoned athletic shorts with a big 53 on the thigh, a Tennessee football shirt, Orange backpack that all athletes have, a name tag that reads "Colton Jumper - 53" on the backpack, and red hair MIGHT be Colton Jumper.

The kid has an ectomorphic build; 224 lbs is extremely generous. 6'2" is an outright lie. If he didn't have on football gear I would've thought he was a tennis player.

I believe that Colton Jumper performs well against the scout teams, but lacks the ability to hang with the first string talent of the major teams he's played against.

No he didn't. Medley missed a field goal, Ellis dropped a TD pass, Hurd fumbled and lost 11-12 yards forcing a field goal attempt, Foreman had the bad pass interference and Dobbs ended the game with an interception. Hell, Jones pretty much had our offense take a knee the last quarter and a half.

So how exactly did Jumper lose the game "singlehandedly"??

Didn't he have two 15 yard penalties that kept OU alive and allowed them to score? Or was that one of the other close games UT lost by being dumb?

How flagrant were the penalties you're referring to (were they flagrant hits to the head, or unintentional arm holds / body bumps)? What kind of intention was behind them (as players jump off sides and other regularly)?

Will remind you, that (although they were both very good, tough hits) JRM was ejected from a Game 1 kick-off or punt return / hit to the returner (fair catch called or not, seems the returner was in a defenseless position), and could have been penalized in Game 2 for hitting a Lineman up near the head, from behind/right side, while the Lineman was just standing still/ really out of the play. (side note: didn't DB have a few issues with this his freshman year, that might have required toning down before getting out of hand?).

Looking at these 4 plays between the 2 LB's, I see a difference.

And that may have been only CJ's 2nd game, and likely only 4th or 5th total series?

I suspect this is a case of one player knowing how to call and set the defense vs someone that may not be ready for that challenge. Better to have one weak link on defense and everyone else in the right set than risk having a better athlete at the position while the rest of the defense is misaligned or in a state of confusion.
This was the excuse last year, but as we were pretty much forced to (after every team we played picked on poor little colton which in turn drags our entire D down as a 20 yd play on jumper is a 20 yd play against our entire d and team) start DKjr, and that worked out rather well, wouldn't you say? Look at other top programs...they're not starting a pathetic walk-on at LB (not saying all walk-ons are scrubs. Ellis last year at TE was a stud.). Even if that pathetic walk-on LB has more playing time and is so great at making the entire D better, you won't see any other big time teams playing someone as bad as jumper over someone as talented (and inexperienced, but risks must be taken in life to surpass mediocrity) as Cortez (or Sapp, El. Berry, Bates, Bryant, and prob more than that). You would think from last year, we realized that giving playing time to talented players so they can get better at reading offenses and lining the defense up, calling coverages, etc. (it's not like we're talking about an athletic freak who is a baller, but only played a few years of football like Kongbo. ****, I'd rather see DE Kongbo out there at LB, tell him to kill whoever has the ball, and let JRM line the D up, and have jumper go get the team some smoothie king) .

The whole "his dad is a big donor" seems like such a Pop Warner or high school argument to me. Everybody knows that kind of favoritism happens at those levels.

But in college football? In the SEC? Really? There are a ton of people who give tons of money to the University. Are they really afraid of pissing off one guy whose kid plays for the football team, and he might not donate anymore? Really?

Yeah I agree losing 1 donor would be like throwing a pebble in the ocean not much of a ripple. I would say it is mainly CJ gets the team in right formation. DK has got it down now but he was not ready 1st game last year. Not sure if Sapp and McDowell could handle the calls yet. Think JRM could but I think they reall want him to stay in his. zone where he is a beast.

Can't wait till Jumper gets burned bad Saturday and misses more tackles and people are still on here saying "give him a chance" After a year and 3 games into a second year

I suspect you're reaching with this possibility.

Not sure I follow Rex. Are you trying to say you wouldn't have a preference between AJ and Jumper?

AJ >> Jumper. Jumper << DKj, who's injured.

No, just saying that I'm really not sure how many full qtr's Jumper has played (it may be fewer than many think). Considering the film we have on jumper, it's just unfortunate that some of the missed tackles and il-positioned plays became etched in recent memory (that il-play will likely go away, if more consistant / consecutive play time is had -- but he may never get it, for reason). If you watch some of DKj's film, you'll see him misread plays also (but that's usually not discussed here; this AJ tape shows similar).

Do you really think AJ and/or DKj, in that coverage, would have stopped the dink, over middle pass to Rogers (VT game)?? Maybe so, but otherwise, good offensive plays occur on good defenders all the time.

This year proves that if you are deep at every position except one, that one position's player will be injured.
