College Baseball - Transfer Portal Tracker

Here’s a top 500 list. It has Ortega and Joyce in there, but not Lawson or Stevenson. Also includes Halvorsen, but we know he’s coming back. Signees Chase Valentine and Dillon Orr are also just inside the top 500.

2022 MLB Draft - Top 500 Prospects — Prospects Live

Trey is also in there.

Kind of a funny coincidence that Joyce is at #104

Beyond Tidwell at 14, Beck at 19, and Gilbert at 22:

104. Ben Joyce

Joyce has some of the most effortless velocity you'll ever find. The fastball has been up to 104 this season with a short slider that he sometimes struggles to command. Joyce has some of the same mechanics as big leaguer Kendall Graveman. Teams will undoubtedly be attracted to the easy gas. He's one of the best relief option in this draft and should get drafted reasonably high because of the arm talent alone.

190. Trey Lipscomb

Lipscomb, a bit of a pop-up this season after largely being a part-time player his first three years on campus, has shown flashes of brilliance for the Volunteers this season. He's blistered the baseball at times, and has the versatility to play all over the infield. Scouts will want to see a more extended look at third base, his likely eventual home. Lipscomb is believed to be an average defender with an average arm for the position, but it the bat breaks through like it has at times in 2022, someone will find a spot for him in the lineup.

293. Jorel Ortega

Ortega burst onto the scene in 2022 being given extended opportunities in a loaded Tennessee lineup. He's got a balanced toolset with some value both on the dirt and on the basepaths. Ortega grades out fringe-average in most departments, with a potential average glove at second base. He's still growing into his strength and could end up an impact bat with a bit more time and seasoning in Knoxville.

474. Seth Halvorsen

TJ in 2019, played OF in 2020 but was cleared to pitch again before shutdown. Very quick arm, athletic delivery that is easy to repeat, 3/4's arm slot. Fastball is 93-96 topped out 100 in 2021. Throws a slider and a changeup, both of which are firm. Projects as a reliever at the next level. Starting fresh at Tennessee.

Gator insiders seem to think we are after catcher transfer Mac Guscette. Not sure if that’s true or just them speculating.

Haven’t heard Gusette’s name’s mentioned yet by any of our beat writers, but worth keeping an eye on given the recent update on Skenes. As you said, It could be them speculating.

Maybe he wants to pitch (and start)? Imagine being offered the opportunity to play for an Omaha team and catch Dollander, Burns and Beam and saying, nah.

If he is wanting to enter the draft as a catcher, our lack of emphasis on slowing the other team’s run game could concern him. It also could just be that he wants the chance to see what is out there.

Who knows for sure. There’s always room for speculation, but at the same time, we run the risk of tying ourselves in knots trying figure out why. He may just want to fully look into his options. We’ll just have to and wait and see.

Just Tony V being smart. Not gonna put all his eggs in one basket. Gotta have an answer at catcher, and I wonder if they'd rather have Dickey somewhere other than behind the plate? Not sure Gusette would be my first choice, but who am I to question him if he's the guy Tony V wants.

No, if you are smart you commit to Tennessee immediately the first time we call you because that’s what smart people do!

Because it seems to be in the realm of possibility right now, I'd just like to throw out there again that THIS could be our lineup next year:

1. Maui Ahuna SS
2. Jared Dickey LF
3. Paul Skenes C
4. Tommy White 3B
5. Blake Burke 1B
6. Jorel Ortega 2B
7. Christian Moore DH
8. Colby Backus RF
9. Kyle Booker CF

This would just be a completely ridiculous lineup.

I would be shocked if Ortega (and Stephenson) don't go pro. Losing a lot of leverage by coming back after stellar years.

Finally got a scouting report on what Halvorsen throws. Excited to have him next season. It’s crazy I look forward to Tennessee baseball almost like I do do Tennessee football
