Coaching strategy differences between CBJ and CJP

The main difference is CBJ didnt have a strategy, he had a chart and believed his "system" was infallible. CJP is a real football coach that will have real strategies.

I like the idea of a coach that is a guru. Jones was never that. In fact, I think his coaching acumen was zip. Butch was more concerned with portraying a head coach, but you either have it or you don’t. In that regard I don’t think Pruitt is vying for credibility. He’s comfortable in his skin and doesn’t care all that much about what others think.

Reading these posts just reminds me of how great Dobbs was in the Read Option offense that fit him so well. I remember how it used to look like he was just jogging (somewhat reminiscent of Tee Martin or Holloway - but on completely different level) and suddenly would be standing in the endzone. He was so dang strong it was funny to hear how defenders complained about how difficult he was to bring down. Dobbs brought such another dimension to the offense that was nearly impossible to account for when he was on his game. That type of west coast spread offense only worked in the SEC when you had a player of that caliber at the helm.
Helton's / Pruitt's offense is more diverse (thank God) than Butch's ever wished to be, as Lyle's was one that hardly ever resembled Tennessee roots. This offense will not be a pure multiple set pro-style attack, but it will be one that incorporates much of it, including more single back, under center, quarterback sneak, I-formation, goalline package, and spread, option, etc etc. In comparison, I think it will be much harder to guess what play or formation is coming next. I for one, cannot wait to see it.

Well you can bet your a$$ we won't be throwing 20 screen passes per game, and will manage to find the TE and the middle of the field on a regular basis.

I liked the line about getting owned by SEC level competition. I don’t think CJP has the same problem. He has SEC experience and knows what it takes to compete against SEC caliber teams.

Butch's biggest problem was that he never learned from his failures. Example - no matter how many times we failed to score in shotgun formation from the 1 yard line, he always insisted on doing it. It doesn't take a genius to see that doesn't work very well, especially when recent results speak for themselves. Yet he continued to do it over and over and over...

Another example was his poor game clock management. It happened in multiple games at crucial times every season. Great coaches learn from their mistakes and make the appropriate changes. Poor coaches are too stubborn to admit they did anything wrong (or just oblivious).

I think Pruitt/Helton will execute and play physical. They will also run a variety of plays from multiple sets which will keep defenses on their toes and tired...a good combination.

We will finally get a good return on all of that fine talent we have been recruiting.

butch was uber predictable and was only able to win due to a few special athletes like Dobbs, Kamara and Jennings.
