You posted his record, I know his record there's nothing to dispute. Cuonzo avg 22 wins per seasons and wins increased every year he was here, yet fans were frustrated with the postseason performance or lack thereof. Purnell's moving on was greeted as an opportunity to upgrade, not the sky is falling. I guess he was successful at Clemson, by their standards, but would not have the resume that should wow anyone in Knoxville. If I'm hiring anyone with limited tournament experience I'm hiring someone who's 20 years younger. You're "suggestion" was stupid from the get go.
First two 60 year olds to be called should be Byrd or Barnes.
Why wouldn't you know about him? I mean he's one of the best coaches in the world. You honestly believe this fanbase, or for that matter the entire SEC fanbase knows a coach who's spent his entire career coaching in the Philippine Basketball Association? And on top of that would be happy with the hire?
Reality is calling, and you should answer.
I also posted attendance under OP, which you seem to be ignoring. I'm not sure a coach that was about to get run out of town would average a sell out at Clemson.
As far as Clemson "upgrading" well, Clemson and UT have similar mid major hiring practices.. Like I said...numerous times....he was just a name, and a guy who I think would probably fit what UT likes in terms of style of play, but not a guy I thought would get a look from UT. However, he's no less stupid than Bruce Pearl, Gregg Marshall, Shaka Smart, Brad Stevens, Mike Miller (?), or any other off the wall candidate listed in this thread. The fact that you don't think he would be a good hire isn't the issue. The fact that you just started making up stuff up and acting like you knew what was up at Clemson with Oliver Purnell when it is obvious that you didn't was my issue. Purnell left Clemson for a 7 year, 2.2 million a year deal at Depaul, which is probably more than UT is about to pay for a coach, soooo, he didn't get "run out of town".
Was getting ready to ask if the posters here had seen this from the other thread. Has anyone fact checked the reality of this comment?

UT basketball opening.......
This is not going to be well received. I have first hand knowledge, that with yesterday's news of Tyndall being fired, Pearl has reached out to UT about its opening. This was done through his agent. He's willing to pay a large portion of his buyout to get the job. His wife wants to be back home. It almost killed him playing in that arena this year and he didn't like it.
Hopefully, his past with them keeps him here".
I'll leave it at this; no one I knew was sad to see him go. When season ticket holders are indifferent that's not a glowing endorsement. Tyndall was mediocre, record wise, and we couldn't throw it in the ocean at home, yet we were still top 10-15 in attendance and avg 15k, so attendance isn't an end all be all indicator of "support". Clemson has good fans that show up well to support athletics, much like Arkansas.
Marshall's only a dumb suggestion because we likely won't pay what he commands, it's not because he wouldn't come (although past feelings may play a role). His agent is on record of saying what it would take to get a meeting with him so he's open to at least listening to other overtures. Likely the case with Archie Miller as well. If we came to Miller with a $2mil contract and he spurned us for $600k to stay at Dayton then I'd finally "accept" what kind of program we have.
If we hired Purnell, I'd look at it as greatly settling. His resume is not impressive.
No. Just a post and VN is running with it. Chad Withrow did say that a friend of his saw Bruce today at the airport or something like that and everyone got wound up but then remebered Pearl still has a home here and his wife's family is from here so....
Also depends on if you trust Withrow or not. After what hart has said and still having Cheek I doubt they would hire Pearl
Here's my take on it:
Bruce was remorseful. He paid his penalty. He still has an obvious love for UT. It's like a guy who cheated on his girlfriend, was really sorry about it, dated another girl, and tried to act happy, but just couldn't forget the first girlfriend.
I think he really loves UT. I know his wife does. His family was happy here.
Did he screw up? Absolutely. But that was then. He's been out of the game up until this year.
If Bobby Petrino can go back to Louisville after doing what he did to them, then I think we could take Bruce Pearl back.
It's not like before him our basketball program was anything, and aside from that one Sweet 16 run, it hasn't been anything since. You watch him like a hawk, and you hire him back, and you let things go back to how they used to be. You saw what he did recruiting wise at Auburn. They even made some noise in the tournament.
I think if you're Dave Hart, and IF Bruce is truly interested, it's the smart move. And you tell Cheek to shove it. The PR team of Bruce and Butch would be amazing for this University.
So my list then would go like this:
1. Bruce Pearl (if available)
2. Rick Barnes
3. Brad Underwood
4. Bryce Drew
5. Will Wade
That's just me. I'd be happy with anyone on that list.
And yes, I know, Hart said he wouldn't hire anyone with a history of NCAA Violations. But at least with Bruce, you KNOW what his history was. There's no secrets, or anything that's gonna pop up. That's my only thinking around that.
