Purnell was not successful at Clemson? He took them to the tournament 3 years in a row and won 20 games 4 years in a row. If you know anything about Clemson basketball, you would know that a record like that is incredibly successful. He ran out of town because Depaul offered him a huge raise. Purnell was coming off his third straight NCAA tournament and had signed the best recruiting class in Clemson history right before he left, but don't let facts stand in your way.

I was in grad school at Clemson during Purnell's tenure, he was practically ran out of town. He had 3 first round exits to double digit seeds as well and that didn't sit well. Throwing out a coach's record doesn't prove your theory right. Clemson made a living off of playing a horrible OOC schedule year in and year out and it showed once ACC play rolled around. No one in Clemson was sad to see him go.
and that is the problem with Purnell. He's more of a get you back to respectability coach. That being said, the NCAA tournament is pretty far away from UT with the current roster. Getting back to the tournament would be a huge move in the right direction.
He was practically ran out of town. People, including the AD was shocked he left. He had just signed a contract extension through 2014 2 years before he left. He was not, in any way, "run out of town".
Per the AD>
Clemson athletic director Dr. Terry Don Phillips said during a news conference he was shocked by Purnell's decision to leave. He said he learned of the move during a phone call from the coach at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"I'm not sure I know what to say," Phillips said. "I'm in a little bit of shock. ... I'm as surprised as anyone."
I will add, from the same article:
Clemson loses all-ACC forward Trevor Booker and wing David Potter, both seniors, but was expected to return the rest of the team that reached the NCAA tournament. Most experts figured the Tigers to challenge for an upper-division spot in the ACC next season.
Yea, sounds like he was on his way out, but like I said, don't let facts stop you.
Run out of town by the fans who were getting frustrated. You'll take to your grave we ran your boy out of town despite offering him a raise and extension and him agreeing in principal to it but don't accept that fans were frustrated around Clemson? I lived there, went to school there, have plenty of friends who are active donors, I believe I have an idea of what the feelings of Purnell were amongst fans around town.
It's like people say stuff thinking other people don't have access to the internet or didn't sit through the Larry Shyatt tenure at Clemson, where Clemson struggled to make the ACC tournament, and then watched Purnell rebuild the roster and go on a pretty impressive run using a full court pressing style that UT fans seem to enjoy.
So, my point is:
1. Has been successful at rebuilding rosters
2. Plays an uptempo style
3. Is available
4. Would probably walk from Chicago to Knoxville for the job.
Now, do I think he will even be considered, probably not, but neither will 3/4 of the people listed in this thread.
I know you're hung up on Martin and all but you seem seriously butt hurt right now. Tell you what, I'll go make a post about O.P. on Tigernet, and return with the results.
And where has he been his whole career?
How naive are you to college basketball? Coach Cal rebuilds every year, all it takes is 3 top notch recruits and your a top 20 team. In college basketball your not winning unless your cheating and that goes for all the coaches you listed above.
Stay tuned Texas St. or Gardner Webb is where Martin will end up soon. He took a potential tourney roster in a horrible conference and managed to parlay that into zero postseason. Cal State Northridge beat his ass this year.
I would not personally be on favor if Purnell. Just my opinion. Not arguing your reasons, just don't think he is the right guy. This is a critical hire and few will be right fit. I honestly am not positive who would be. As sick as I am of hearing about Pearl and even though I know it won't happen, I do think TBA would be packed and he would bring a couple nice recruits this season. I am mad at myself for even entertaining it. However, that is the one guy I could say is a sure thing for this program. Never, ever happening though. Not saying it should.
Probably a Midwest mid major would be his destination
