Coaching Rumors/ Openings Thread

Schertz has told people close to UT that he wants job when Barnes retires. He coached at Lincoln Memorial and his family love this area. Would be the easiest hire DW could ever make. He told teams like Cincy and NC state not interested. He will stay at St. Louis until our job opens.
Unless he goes to Michigan if/when Dusty leaves.

I would like to see what he does without Cream Abdul-Jabbar for the first time. I’m on board with making the Iowa State coach say no.
“For the first time?” You do know he won 83% of his games and went to 3 Final Fours in his final six seasons while in Division II, right? Similar pedigree to Bruce Pearl, minus the infractions.

I really don’t care what someone does not at the D1 level. His one season without having Avila was a losing season.

Hopefully we start the search at bigger and better names before getting to Schertz.

I am slowly coming around to the idea that we will have Barnes for 2-3 more seasons.

Schertz would win big at UT imo

I think Schertz is one of the best coaches in college basketball. I’d go out on a limb and say he’ll be competing for championships somewhere eventually. I’d love if it was here.

What “bigger and better” names are going to leave a winning situation to come to UT? (Dowd spurning UNC and staying at Arizona is a good example.) We got extremely lucky in getting Rick Barnes when Texas decided all those NCAA tournament appearances just weren’t good enough. Alabama hit the lottery when Nick Saban got tired of pro football and came available at just the right time.

A lot of the old time “big names” are hanging it up because they won’t deal with the current climate in college sports. Getting an up-and-comer who can navigate the current mess is going to be the key.

Basketball is basketball. Lower division coaches tend to do well at higher level provided that they can recruit. Also Avila is a good player, but he doesn't mean the difference between an NCAA tournament bid and a losing season. He's good, but he's not that good.

Those questioning Schertz are allowing only his Indiana St and St Louis tenures to affect their opinion. He completely developed, raised, and sustained success at the highest levels of D2 basketball over a long period of time at LMU. With D2 resources and talent at his disposal, I think that is as important as anything he's done at either of his other stops. Having success in limited time at the other places just reinforces he can develop at a fast pace no matter where he lands, IMO.
