Those multiple technical on players and undisciplined dirty plays, may hurt his immediate HC landings. Fair or not. So I think he will be available for assistant openings.

I think he's much more suited to be an assistant coach than the head coach

Some coaches are just not made to be head coaches...there have been a few over the years.
Stellar assistant coaches and recruiters, just can't connect the dots to be a Head Guy.

FWIW - I think if English is let go, Barnes would welcome him back.

I think it’s relevant here since at least 2 former assistants are on hot seats. English and Forbes. Plus we’ll be looking to replace Barnes sooner rather than later so keeping an eye on the up and comers makes sense.

They'd probably take him back in a heart beat, especially since they'll probably be canning their coach.

He was born in Cincy and went there, so I'm sure he'd love to be back there. Can't blame him for moving on to a prestigious program like UCLA though. He did make it to a Final 4 there I believe, so it wasn't a complete failure.
