Coaching carousel going to be historic

Ole Miss is at home the rest of the way out. Stop the "but last year" nonsense. Florida was surging into the end of the season. its why Napier kept his job.

But in the meantime, I look forward to you posting your betting slip that on Ole Miss losing during these final 4 games.
you really don’t like it when anyone says the slightest criticism of Lane, do you, lmao

I tend to believe Mullen deserved to be fired, and Napier was the wrong choice to replace him.

Two things can be true at the same time.

Mullen all but quit coaching in 2021, downplayed recruiting and refused to get rid of Grantham. He also didn’t have the good sense to play Kyle Trask until Franks broke his ankle in 2019. See also his loyalty to Emery Jones over Anthony Richardson.
There's probably different takes on this. Things Mullen has said recently since being at UNLV points to him being told "No" on everything he asked for, but then they give the next guy (Napier) everything Mullen asked for. If any of that is accurate, I can totally see him checking out. But, there's always two sides to that kind of story. By that time though, there was probably no salvaging the relationship and hte correct action was taken.

Trask was always better than Franks. That was an odd choice. Can't recall if Emory was initally supposed to be better and he maybe gave him too long.

Who the heck do all these programs think they're going to get?

A funny thought occurred to me earlier-

What if LSU makes a run at Marcus Freeman who realizes that he has reached the ceiling of what ND is capable of in the year 2025?
.
Bet BK would crawl over broken glass to get that gig back, but he just HAD to burn his bridges when he left South Bend.

Pretty sure they’ve had opportunities/chances over the last two seasons and lost a game that cost themselves it.

Edit: Also, pretty sure Missouri still has to lose one more game before they’re fully eliminated. If they come out of the next weeks 10-2 after upsetting the #3 team and beating a ranked Oklahoma, they’d pretty much be in with their resume. (It’s just honestly no one expects them to do both.)
This is pretty much spot on. As a Mizzou fan I want our future focused on keeping drink, his staff, and players. The momentum about Mizzou football is strong throughout the state and climbing.

There’s always two sides to a story.

But when you’ve consistently burned bridges with HS coaches in the state, publicly downplayed the importance of recruiting immediately after getting crushed 41-7 by your biggest rival, chances are leadership won’t be eager to grant your “ask” without contingencies.

That contingency was getting rid of Grantham, and Mullen refused to do it. By the end of the 2021 season he stopped giving a 💩 and it was time for him to go.

There are going to be some fan bases that are going to be sorely disappointed.
Not just over who they get for a new coach, but just year-to-year outcomes. In the playoff era, making the CFP has become the end all be all, for better or for worse. 12 teams make it, but like 20+ fanbases think their school should be in it every year. I'd say at least 10 fanbases think their school should be winning or almost winning a national title every year. They can't all be made happy.

Curious if that was something that was his thing while at State and wasn't spoke much of, or if that developed in his time at UF. I may have heard that before while he was at UF, but not certain. Never heard those knocks on him while he was at State.

Probably why he was relegated to TV roles for a bit. No one touched him after some of those antics at such a program. Prob why he's also doing pretty well at UNLV and enjoying being a once big fish in a very attractive smaller pond. He's not having to exert a lot of effort getting overlooked good players to come to Vegas

He supposedly is a very difficult personality. Abrasive, doesn't work well with others, etc. When UF hired him to be HC, they were generally pleased with the hire but I remember some of their people bringing that up.

I think he has a lot of Chip Kelly in him. Kelly supposedly is similarly abrasive. Doesn't like the back-slapping and hobnobbing of recruiting. Thinks too highly of his system and believes that it'll always work if it is executed correctly, no matter the talent level or type of player that he signs. I don't think it's a coincidence he's done well at less resourced, more developmental-type programs like Miss St and UNLV and it didn't work out at UF, although he was much better at UF than Billy was.

He didn't have to rush into another job given the buyout he got. Honestly he did one of the smarter paths than these other coaches do.

UNLV may be developmental, but the facilities are quite nice for a G group and resources are apparently available to get good players inhouse. I think they fly a little under the radar for what they have well because it's Vegas and UNLV. But, the atmosphere for him there would be like you say. In his self promotional release he did recently to put himself back out there as a 'changed' coach with all the big openings, he said when he walked in out there he was like wow, this is what they have at UNLV.

Especially since he had some rep rehab to do. Take a break. Enjoy life. Refocus the things that got you canned if you wish. Kiffin stayed active with his approach, but they both had rehab to do on their reps.

The AD was saying the retreaded big coach approach works for them because they don't expect any single decent coach to stay more than 3 years anyway. It's their reality. So instead of the up and comers trying to invent new systems, recycling successful big name coaches with systems that work and need the re-imaging process is kinda their new thing and it's been working for them. So, when/if Mullen gets back in the game they'll move on to the next big cast off that is needing to rehab his brand and they'll keep rolling. Kind of paraphrased, but I did the meat and potatoes of the HC/AD speak in teh article.

Call me too rational to be a HC, but UNLV/MWC. On the rise in conference. Nice gig Admin wise. Purdue/B10 bottom dweller. I'm thinking I'm good in Vegas with the office that overlooks The Strip.

Especially in the playoff era. Like if a quality coach puts in 2-3 years to get into a Boise type run, they'll cakewalk into a playoff spot everytime. Like if Mullen goes 11-1 this year and misses playoff, but returns to coach next year, they'll prolly get some early season ranking points to have shorter path to make it to top G5 ranked school
