Coach Jones Report Card

I'd say there are very (VERY) few among us who have (1) the knowledge of the nature of the college head coaching job, and (2) the insights into what's really happening in the program to even begin to grade Butch using anything other than Win-Loss record. [volfannbama sure got that right]

And those very (VERY) few people who do understand the job well enough, and have enough insider information to reach a reasonable conclusion...well, not a single one of them are talking.

Probably Doug Matthews comes closest, though he has never actually been a head coach himself, and doesn't necessarily have the best access to today's program at all levels. Anyway, if you really want to get a report card on Butch, that's your best best; listen to 104.5 in Nashville on Sunday mornings.

Short of that, just judge Butch and the coaching staff based on our Win-Loss record, like Volfannbama said.

App State - performance = C- result win = A
VT - C and A
Ohio - D and A
Florida - B and A
Georgia - B and A
TAM - A and C
Bama - D- and F
USC - F and F

Hope they figure it out. Love my VOLS. I put 70% of our problems on injuries. The rest is offensive line/ play calling/QB. I'm not a coach. Just a VFL fan's perspective.

Potentially 2nd yr in a row botching going to ATL. 8-4 coaching with SEC east champ talent

Thatwas your expectation, and mine as well. But if win total is higher, cant fire a HC for that, not considering the state the program was in

If Dobbs plays like he did Saturday and we run the same type plays, he goes 6-6. He needs a quaterback change or simply run 90% and 10% off the playaction. I would test the waters on a different qb. This hurry up and punt offense is killing our defense. Its now time to control the time of possession and play some smart football. He has to adjust his mindset and play the game with the squad he has, which is something he has failed to do throughout his entire tenure here.

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts.We would all have a Merry Christmas. Right now we are 5-3 and need to get to 6-3 so that 10-3 stays a possibility.

Sometimes things r just made to be too complicated. At the end of the day it's just coaching football. U can look at however u want but we've made the same mistakes for 4 years and thanks to a 10 million buyout we will make the same for at least 2-3 more. That's not players that's coaching U can try to polish a turd but at the end of the day it's still a turd. A turd folks is what Lyle is so sit back and enjoy. In being far too generous, Lyle gets a D on his performance.

My opinion -- free and worth every cent. Fire at will.

Recruiting C. Having "ranked" recruiting classes means nothing if they don't fill needs or flame out due to poor coaching.

Game Planning D-. First half results are awful. That means the game plan is awful.

Attitude C+. He says some good things but deep down I believe he's arrogant and thinks the Tennessee hillbillies don't deserve him.

Coaching D. His love affair with the read option regardless of personnel has led to failure.

Improvement C. Year over year improvement is partially due to cyclical changes in the SEC East.

Gimmicks B+. He is full of gimmicks but most have proven to be gimmicks. He gets A for effort, D for results.

Cliches A+. He does not leave a cliché on the bench. He is all over them.

Best Staff In America F. He is so low in self-esteem that he is afraid to hire quality coaches that he fears might be better than he is. Yet, he is arrogant and egotistical. It must be difficult to sleep.

Team Management C+. All the players have good shower habits and clean uniforms.

Future Incomplete. He is at a crossroads. If he does what he NEEDS to do, he might succeed. If he does what he WANTS to do, failure is a matter of time.

Flame away ... GO BIG ORANGE!

Sorry, but giving them a C+ in Team Management kinda made this just seem like a bash thread. He is a solid A in that department. He is no nonsense when it comes to discipline.

Only way he will be successful though is if he finds an offensive coordinator and then leave him alone to do his thing.

OP rather then make up a bogus score card with an inaccurate assessment, just say you don't like the guy.

Couldn't disagree more! Our won loss record can be very good, we only play 2 good teams all year. Based on a won loss record against bad teams you could get fooled into believing were doing ok.
You don't have to be a coach or even a former player to know that ain't the case if you have watched the games!
I have watched a lot of good football teams play good football , well coached teams,
That is not what I been seeing when I watch UT!

Butch Jones is the Jackie Moon of College Football. A guy who promotes the team but knows nothing about X's & O's

And yet you (and I) have a limited and superficial idea of where the problems might be, because of our lack of in depth understanding of the roles of all the coaches and players, who is supposed to do what when, who actually did what when, how the two differed, and how much each of those variances contributed to outcomes like first downs, incompletions, scores and turnovers.

And I don't just mean on Saturdays during the game; we at least get to watch that and form our own (limited, myopic) viewpoints on that action. Even harder for us to see and judge is what happens the other 164 hours of each week among the players and coaches in their preparation and development.

So yeah, we're playing pinata blindfolded when we think we can put together anything approaching an accurate 'report card' ourselves.

We're better off if we stick with judging at the level we can be sure we got it right: Ws and Ls.

Is it ok if i still like butch but complain about how hard-headed he & oc seems to be when the gameplan isnt working but we keep on w the same? When u are at your job and something didnt work right do you just try the same thing again? - weve seen some big turnarounds after half but ithink most of that is players making plays. Not trying some different basic things to mix it up is frustrating and i dont have to be a head coach to see or know the difference..so how about a screen or draw here and there? Last year the offense had more playfakes which kept things off balance. When was the last time we saw dobbs forward handoff pass out of the gun? Or a reverse yeah high risk/reward but if u struggling anyways try somethin!
