Our Defense is very fixable:

Need All American Corner McCoy back

Need future NFL Corner Gibson back

Need to move Hood to Nickel and sit Boos sorry half-ass down on the bench

Need all SEC LB Arion Carter back

Even with poor Safety play, just having OUR starters HEALTHY makes this a top 30 defense in FBS and we would be 8-0 or at WORST 7-1 right now and ranked top10 ready to make a playoff run. Period. Just need OUR OWN starters on the field. Ta-Da...

I know, I know.

"Every team has injuries, next man up."

Yeah...no. Losing a starting Cornerback is almost as bad as losing your QB. Nobody has 2nd team players as good as their Starters in the NIL era. So the opposing QB is gonna absolutely ABUSE your replacement (see: UGA game). Thats down 1 Corner. Losing BOTH Corners for the season?? Its AMAZING that we are 6-2 SEC and thats only because we have a top5 offense in the nation to outscore other teams.

All thats needed to "fix" our defense is to get healthy in the offseason....and hopefully grab a couple Safeties from the portal including 1 guy that can start Day1 next year. The good news is Hood likely stays 1 more year to get his draft stock higher, and Gibson will definitely be back next year. As long as those 2 are healthy we will be quite good at Corner next year too. Right now, our Dline only has about 2 seconds to try and get a sack before the ball is out....and thats WITH giving 6 and 8 yard cushions outside at Corner to keep from getting beat deep. We can go back to playing lots of Man defense again next year.
Marcus, I love the passion that you bring to this board.

But everyone is looking at 2024 as if that were the standard for Coach Banks and his staff. It is not. It is the outlier. If you look at his defenses over the last three seasons, they have not been top 30 defenses. He struck gold in 2024. Do I think he can do better than he has done this year, yes. But do I think he is the type of defensive coordinator that can consistently field a defense that can consistently win in the SEC? Unfortunately, no.

It is what it is.

Yes, it's fixable, but not likely to happen in the next four weeks. Only if some tough decisions are made - like replacing some of the staff mid-season.

Benching number 22 and 23 would improve the defense considerably, imo.

It really depends on how you define fixable. If fixable means, can this defense get to a "below average" level vs. "one of the worst in the country" level than yes, I think that's possible, especially if we get McCoy back. We need to clean up tackling. It would only take a mediocre defense to go along with our top tier offense for Tennessee to be playoff caliber. It starts this week - Oklahoma is not good offense. Can we hold them to less than 25 points or not?

George Macintyre at free safety and Max Gilbert as the strong safety.

At crunch time, insert Jackson Ross at nickel to start up some kung fu fighting.

Our D has been at the bottom of the SEC for the last 5 years except one good year. What are we waiting for to fix it. It should have already been done. We haven't been able to get off the field on third down consistently for 5 years.
Our defense was 3rd in the SEC in points allowed and 4th in total yards allowed in 2023. They were 3rd in points per game and second in total yards per game in 2024. We were 6th in the SEC in both yards allowed and points allowed in 2022. This year and 2021 are the outliers.

Yes....and should have been taught in middle school. Also to be a tackler you have to want to....Some don't have that want to.

What bothers me is....poor tackling has been allowed year after year.
I heard last night that there had been some extra lively tackling drills in practice the last couple of weeks. Coaches can't do the tackling for them in games just like basketball coaches can't make shots for their players. All a coach can do is teach proper fundamentals and practice the hell out of it

Facts don't matter when you live in Vol-fandemonium. It's all about the feels.

If our LB's learn not to get trapped inside it will do wonders for the defense. A typical possession goes like this. 1st down - TFL. 2nd down - give up 5. 3rd down - lose contain and give up 15 yrds and 1st down. Rinse and repeat. Consistency is something we need to find.

Ridiculous take. Don't you know that baseball players are taught to hit a fastball in youth league. There is absolutely no excuse for a college player to strike out three times in a baseball game.

I know you're kidding, but after a week or 2 of practice i think ole String Bean Gmac would take better angles than our Safeties have many times this year. Thats intelligence and instinct. Not size or speed. Our angles and tackling on the secondary have been piss poor all year. Thats a legit complaint.

I just think its a personnel issue. Not a coaching issue. We did much better last year with former walkon Brooks at Safety who put up BIG numbers back there. He was smart and took no false steps. Thats what we need. Natural Safeties that take good angles and read QBs eyes and progressions. We dont have that on our roster right now at Safety. If Hood cant go we are screwed at Corner too.

Exactly! Our safeties seem to think that are much much faster than they really are. The angles they take are prepositus.

And that is one reason we continue to give up these 50+ yard touchdowns.

The coaches somehow need to convince them that they are the last line of defense.

Retreat, retreat, fools.

Yes, George is smart enough to know his limitations........I hope?
