Coach Doug Mathews

JG was throwing to the receiver crossing the back of the end zone and the ball would have been 5 yards behind him had it not gotten deflected
Astounds me the University known for Peyton Manning cannot recruit a top tier QB.

I'm gonna quit the discussion of FGs, though. Even a win last night doesn't change the path we are on this year as a team and for the future as a program.

The current JR and Sr classes are major disappointments outside of a few solid players. I think Pruitt should go with the youth movement at this point. The players don’t know their responsibilities or how to line up correctly anyway.
I bet some position coaches got an earful after the game last night.

To all the position coaches

What happened with Chaney? He was wide open under Dooley. When I see the conservatism with the offense I am concerned that Pruitt and Fulmer have a hand in it.
I’m not sure thatFulmer has anything to do with it. Besides that, even if he did, do you realize how high scoring our offense was under him. The Heath Shuler/Peyton Manning years were very high scoring.

He knows..... but he also sees the other QBs at practice everyday.... the cupboard must be bare
To repeat: we don’t know what we have at QB with JT and BM bc there was NEVER a legit QB competition in the first place! JG was anointed as our starter based on experience alone. His ego is too fragile to withstand a legit competition. That much should be clear by now.,

You can’t actually believe Fulmer is in anyway involved with play calling or game day scheming. That’s beyond ridiculous. If asked I am sure he provides input. I am sure he is never asked.

Lost me there; you simply cannot make that declaration. Pruitt hasn't done a damn thing to prove he is "the guy".

And before anyone jumps my case, that's not the same thing as saying he should be fired immediately.
Except upset my and auburn last season

Mcdad you are one of my favorite people on VN...you know this. I couldnt disagree more with you though.

I do not EVER EVER want a coach who doesnt believe in his team enough to go for it. Both times we failed.. on 4th and 1. You go for 4th and 1 every single time. If we cant do that, shouldnt wear orange.

I hate that Pruitt didnt take the 5yd offsides penalty INSTEAD of the made FG that would have given us 4th and half a yard at the 1. We should have taken that for a TD. This is football. 18 inches with 11 guys. We cant get that then we dont need to even put on pads and pretend to be a football team
It would have been a half the distance penalty. Not a full 5 yards.

Not if you have not proven you can consistantly control the line of scrrimmage. Ask Fulmer, who is a HOF coach, I garuntee he takes the points. I know because I heard him booed on many occasiions at Neyland for doing just that. Worked out pretty well for him!

yup then start a TF on road at Florida. Makes sense.

Why does it matter if the QB is a True Freshman? Seems every other school has no problem starting a TF but the moment we think about it then we best close down the program cause we’ll start a TF on the road.

If he’s good it won’t matter where he makes his first start, but if they start one they need to stick with him.

It really isn’t astounding. David Cutcliffe was an elite offensive coordinator that had top talent lining up to play for him. We have not had anyone even close to his caliber since he departed.

You forget the Dooley years too quickly, he has called some terribly predictable games in his time here (and Georgia). I think his over-all scheme can win, I think his play calling is suspect.

Yea both touchdowns were terrible passes, JJ is a hero we dont deserve. There were very few "good" passes all night, completions that could have gone for big gains were snatched out of the dirt, toe down out of bounds, deflections ect.

But it isnt moot. The are common reasons going for it on 4th (when not critical for victory). One is to give your offense line confidence. It can be a big boost to the psyches of young men to know thecoach believes in them. We had rushed well and pass protected well. The confidence should be in how they played during the entire game.

The other reason is to give your defense some additional rest. This would be the only reason I can fathom doing it during the BYU game.

You harken back to GSU but that isn't valid for last nights game. We had a history in the game we were playing. We were playing good defense (until fatigued). And Cimaglia was on the money. There is no reason to not kick.

So why did we go for it? Bad coaching decisions. Those 3 - 6 points means no overtime.
I agree. We kick, we win. It is hard to leave points on the field. We are in no position to leave points on the field. TDs are preferred but getting points out of a drive is the goal. Points are points. If all we did was kick field goals for the rest of the year and we won I don’t think the majority would complain. Plenty on here would for sure 🙄
